I edit VOD content in FCP7, that typically runs 80-87mins & have to do lots of audio editing.

I’ve noticed when I blow my waveform up in the viewer window it bogs my machine down.

Is there anything I can do to alleviate this frustrating problem?

can i ask if you have any markers on those clips?

i haven’t had FCP slow down due to waveforms,
but if i’m zoomed all the way in on a timeline with markers, it gets incredibly slow.

you can hide the markers and the problem goes away.
go to Edit Menu > Project Properties, and de-select the type of marker you want to hide.

FCP is rather slow at generating the waveforms.
    is that the issue?
or it’s just slow to work on them?

Put the Waveform Cache on the fastest drive you have. Let it fully draw before attempting anything else. It’s been like this since v. 1.
