you would probably be better off making SUBCLIPS of the sections you wanted to re-name.
read up on that,
but basically, you define the section you want to subclip in the viewer with in/outs,
hit apple U and you’ve got a subclip in the browser,
ready to be re-named.

when it comes time to re-capture the high-res media,
you will most likely use the MEDIA MANAGER to create a high res version of your sequence with just the parts you’ve used.
then do a batch capture.
this is based on reel# and time-codes, so names do not really play a part

if you;ve got a file-base workflow, then i don’t know.
haven’t worked like that yet.

hi, shelby.

DH Subtitle is a text generator plugin.

it’s “thing” is it can be bottom justified,
and also has options to add a transparent box behind the text.
and you can add drop-shodow or outline to the text.

this is all cool, but it’s not really a “system” for subtitling.
i outlined a within-FCP system/process for subtitling in your previous post

i think i also mentioned Text Up Pro.
this, like DH Subtitle, is a text generator plugin for FCP,
but it does MORE.

the main extra advantage of Text Up Pro is it’s auto-wrapping.
you type in a lot of words,
it fits them onto one, or two, or three, or however many lines are needed.

this is very useful.

another useful function it has is that the text can be bottom, top or CENTRE justified.
centre justification comes in very handy for blocks of text that you want to sit in the middle of the screen.

anyway, i think there’s a demo of that too,
so you should try them both out.

you can easily rename files from within fcp.

Modify Menu > rename > clip to match file & file to match clip.

or right click on the clip itself in the browser for the same functions.

i haven’t worked with file-based media, (As opposed to tape-based)
but i’d ask around a bit before changing the file names.
sounds like a bit of a dead end if you needed to go back to the originals.

the MEDIA MANAGER solution i outlined lets you change the names of the CLIPS,
while keeping the file names untouched.

there are those who would still find this an unacceptable risk,
and would suggest simply using the description column.

as Walter says sequences and duplicates of sequences will contribute a lot to project size bloat
htey are very complex entities.

rather than keep old sequences in a project,
i’ll make duplicates of the project file itself,
archiving the edit at certain stages.

now on top of this,
there is some bug in FCP, whereby project file sizes can grow and grow,
and they are very hard to reduce.

i have deleted EVERYTHING from a project, and the file size still stays large!

i suspect the project may be tracking old render files, but i’m not positive.

BUT!
there IS a solution,
and that is to copy everything from one project into a new one.

i once had a 170MB project go back to 17MB from doing this.

BUT!!
there is a down-side to the copying process:
you can lose your master / affiliate relationships.
meaning, you wont be able to match frame back to the browser/bin.

BUT!!!
there is a solution to this, too.
and that is that you need to copy clips, multi-clips, and sequences separately.
that’s right, three separate copy/ paste actions.

if your project is complicated, that can mean a fair bit of re-arranging on the other end to get all the clip, multis, and sequences back into their correct folders.

i’m just trying this now, in response to your question.

auto-select is a part of the solution,
saved motion favorites are another

i put the lineo-cut on V1,
and the multiclip on V2.

V2 is auto-selected, V1 is not.

V2 is small box sitting over line-cut which is full screen.

when i see an edit in the line-cut,
i Control V to put a cut in the multi-clip, (no need to select, thanks to auto-select)
and select the angle from the viewer.

as you say the multiclip goes full screen.

but now i just hit Q to toggle back to the canvas,
and then i invoke a saved motion favorite,
which makes it a small box again.
again, no need to select the clip, thanks to auto-select.

the trick is to set the box how you lie it.
double click that clip into the viewer,
safe a motion favorite (control f)

this appears in your favorites bin in the effects tab of the browser.
you can, and should re-name it.
for simplicity’s sake make sure it’s the upper-most motion favorite in your favorites bin,
and now you open the keyboard layout manager (option h)
and assign “motion path favorite 1” to a shortcut that’s easy and fast for you.

there are probably other variants of this process that would also work.

not sure if you want one single file that is e lo-res EXPORT of your timeline (you said you laid of to tape i the past)

or a low-res version of the timeline with it’s separate clips.

probably the latter, right?
so you need to use the MEDIA MANAGER.

also,i m going to assume that you will want to take the journo’s edited sequence and reconnect to your hires files.

select the sequence in the browser,
or select all in the timeline,

File Menu > Media Manager

– use RECOMPRESS mode from the first pulldown.
– set sequences to: your flavour of low-res. (more below)

– DONT delete unused.
– Base Media FIle Names on: Existing file names

– request a new project

best flavour of low res.
depends on what you can handle.
when you choose one of the options, the Media Manager will show you the size of the new files,
in the green bars at the top.

DV may well be small enough.
if not there is the OfflineRT family of codecs.
if you are both using FCP7, check out the new ProRes LT & ProRes proxy codecs.

when your journo is done editing, they can email the project back to you,
but get them to archive, or compress it first.

right or control click on the file in the browser, and chose archive or compress.
terminology changes depending on the operating system… but does the same thing.
make the file 10 times smaller.

on your end run the sequence thru Media Manager again.

this time:

– CREATE OFFLINE from the pull down
– set sequences to: the original format
– DONT delete unused.
– Base Media FIle Names on: Existing file names

you’ll get a new project with the edit, all clips will be offline,
so you then reconnect to your media.

(any media the journo adds like music or photos will probably not be on your system, of course)

as for the spaces:
check the settings of the sequence you pasted into.
sounds like it has a different frame rate than the one you copied from.
