i use QuicKeys, and its pretty effective if you have a huge amount of repetitive tasks.
it’s about $80-90 but there other apps that do essentially the same thing for less $$

it does take a certain amount of time to program the macros,
so it;s only really effective if you need to do the same thing a lot of times.
although what you need sounds pretty simple to program.

an important trick when programming macros is the PAUSES you leave between certain commands.

i see. (i haven’t worked with red media yet.)

so i’m guessing the only real way to alter the names (removing the _H)
would be to first alter the names of the master, full res files first,
so there’s no file name duplication

but that would probably screw something else up.

FCP reconnects via FILE NAME, and if it is different IN ANY WAY AT ALL, it wont work.

only two way to go with this:

reconnect manually.

remove the _H from the files using a batch re-naming app.
i like R-name.

if you need some form of differentiation,
then put the files in a different FOLDER.

if you really, really need the _H, do this:

REMOVE the _H,
reconnect,
add the _H in FCP (you could automate this, but for a one-off job it can quicker to do it manually)
the use the Modify Menu > Rename function to rename the FILES to match the CLIPS.
(Also accessible by right clicking on the clips)

it’s easy!

copy the first clip, (Apple C)
select the second one,
and Option Apple V to “Paste Attributes”
(you can also right-click on the clip and choose “Paste Attributes”)

tick “Levels” in the Attributes window,
and hit ok.

as both tracks are the same duration,
you dont have to worry about the “Scale Attributes” check-box at the top of the window.

Probably use Prores as a codec.

for frame size you could just go with your delivery format, which is standard def, (PAL or NTSC)

but it might be safer to go with an HD frame size,
in case there is some future need for your show in HD

i’m assuming you are shooting HD,
buy you don’t say what your frame sizes are.
that would help.

Different frame rates is just asking for a hard time.
FCP cant deal with that very well.

i cant really help with the weird problem,
(but what is the frame rate of the original, i wonder?)

BUT
in generalt, the recommended approach is to export using the current settings,

THEN to take that file into Compressor, and convert it to whatever you need.

you have a bit more control in compressor,
and better quality scaling.

oh, and why export as HDV?

well i installed it, and Desktop Preview BROKE again!

i quite FCP, ran software update again, and got the all clear.

then replaced the DesktopVideoout.component again,

Desktop Preview now works again.

and now when i run Software Update, i get the “Pro Applications Update 2009-01” notification again!

so i’m leaving it alone now.

i just got a new Software Update notification:

“Pro Applications Update 2009-01 addresses general compatibility issues, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues. This update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Server, and Logic Studio.”

it’s relatively small,
i downloaded only and had a look,
sure enough, there is a new VideoOutSupport.pkg in there.

i’m pretty sure this is the official fix.

I managed to get to that file on the FCP7 install disc.
here’s what to do:

Load up your Final Cut Studio Install disk,
or if you’ve made a disk image (good idea) access that.

Inside that, notice that the “Instal Final Cut Studio” package is actually an Alias,
so right-click on that and “Show Original”

You’ll be taken to a folder called “Installer” inside of which is another folder called “Packages”

Inside the Packages folder locate the VideoOutSupport.pkg,
right-click on it, and “Show Package Contents”

Inside the Contents folder, locate the Archive.paz.gz file.
Drag it to the desktop, and double click on it to un-zip it.

This will create a folder called “Library”
Open it, go to the QuickTime folder inside it,
and there you will find the file “DesktopVideoout.component”

Put this file in Macintosh HD > Library >QuickTime,
replacing the similarly named file there.

Digital Cinema Desktop Preview should now work.
