this happened to me recently, although our offset was nothing like 3 seconds, it was 3 frames, sometimes 2.

turned out the problem was corrupted files somehow due to “capture now” from a non-controllable device.
we had a feed from a telecine going direct into FCP,
and FCP was crash recording.

we found a solution.

if we exported the clips from FCP as self contained QuickTime movies, same settings, the new files would behave as expected.
i’m pretty sure we did a re-connect to the new files.

the Media Manager WONT work if all your clips are contiguous.
that is, if you have simply BLADED a longer clip in the timeline,
and each frame naturally follows the previous one.

this can also happen if you have been working form the viewer and your new in point is the next frame on from your last out point.

MM will do the most EFFICIENT export, joining clips back together into one file.

one approach is to select every second clip,and raise them to a new track.
Media Manage the two tracks seperately

another way to get around MM is to remove TWO frames from every edit.
ONE frame only doesn’t seem to work, as M will always ADD a frame to your selection.
so if you remove TWO frames from your timeline, you’ll really only lose on as you get one back.
weird!
but if you need eery frame, then this is not for you.

another way is to copy all your timeline clips into a new bin,
then BATCH EXPORT.

if your clips are all the same name batch export will not like that.
you would have to rename them manually.
but best to select all the timeline clips, right click and “make independent clip” first.

audio, yes.
video, no.

with audio, it’s called “Linking”
line up your clips in the timeline,
select them,
Apple L to Link them.

you can Link multiple audio clips,
and you can link multiple audio clips and ONE Video clip.

to group multiple video clips,
you could consider creating “Multiclips”,
they don’t appear as a stack of clips, but one “Multiclip”

i think its the view menu, anyway.
i always use the shortcut Shift S.

you must have hit that by mistake. happens all the time!

other accidental keystroke mishaps are:

W toggles the viewer & canvas through “wireframe” modes and can leave you with a black screen.

Shift W toggles the viewer & canvas through “rgb” modes and can leave you with a white screen.

hi scott.

there IS an easy (but weird) way to Close All Gaps, but it only works if you have a VERY simple timeline.
no split edits allowed. (where picture and sound are not cut at the same point)

select all the clips you want to “de-gap”
drag them to the CANVAS and drop them into the red Overwrite window.

then selected clips will all be re-edited back into the timeline, with no gaps.

they will be edited to the timeline starting from where your playhead is,
and the original ones will still be there,
so there will be some tidying up to do.

shortcuts are great, too.
Shift G is move to next gap,
Control G is close gap.

yeah, because of the way FCP’s Media Manager and reconnect work,
reconnecting in this case will probably not work at all.

or more annoyingly, not work most of the time, but work ok other times.
basically its a mess.
