It really depends what you shot it in and what they want delivered. You’re better off sticking in 23.98 if that’s what you shot (and it’s easy to deliver in as well).

Shouldn’t rebuild, just duplicate and adjust. I prefer sending the ProRes to resolve so I actually do a find all in the XML and replace with Optimized Media. I’m typing this on my phone so I can go into specifics but I found a tutorial through google a while back. One thing that might work is a scene detection workflow. It’s my last ditch but always works. Once you get it back into FCPX copy and pasted parameters and transitions to get back where you were.

I shoot on a 5D Mark III as well, and our workflows seem pretty similar. Nine times out of ten things seem to work best by just letting Resolve take care of things in the media pool for you, i.e. go straight to “Conform” and import the XML, allowing Resolve to take care of the relinking without manually adding your folders to the pool. Another thing is that you seem to be using 23.98 and 24 interchangeably, which could be part of the problem. One last thing, did you have the 5D record timecode?

I’ve had any number of issues with conforming, ranging from it not finding a single file, to bringing everything in but being a few frames off (which I blame on 23.98 vs. 24). My biggest recommendation, especially if you’re handing off a drive to your colorist, is to duplicate the timeline and only used clips to a different drive (or disk image), remove anything that isn’t absolutely necessary (transitions, plugins) and bake in the hard to translate stuff with handles (retiming and optical flow). At this point export and conform an XML, and you should have an easier time. It might seem like a lot of work, but it really takes under an hour for most things, and it will be worth it when your film comes back just perfect.

Just make sure you do some research. Started this journey on the 1,1 without issue, so seems to work for all Mac Pros across the board. Originally I got the Sonnet which worked with my hard drives, but not the Drobo. A bit of research ended up revealing that the CalDigit cards worked flawlessly with the Drobo. Just keep in mind that each of the aftermarket cards have their little quirks. Also 4x PCIe is just right for these cards, should be fine.

I actually went from a flashed 4970 to a 5870 and there wasn’t a huge difference. My reasoning was that 10.6.4 (I believe) broke compatibility. Your card should more than last the next year, but if you were on a 2600XT, you’d definitely want to upgrade. I recently added USB3 which has been quite nice. Went with the CalDigit card, and use it to connect to a Drobo 5D.

I love seeing this. I see a lot of “FCPX doesn’t do this or that” but I never run into these problems myself anymore. More often than not I’m saying “Well, if you’d used X this would be really fast, but now you’ll have to…” Have you guys run into any major roadblocks lately? I’m finding most workflows are maturing to the point where using X doesn’t hinder anything, it just changes it from time to time.

That’ll be some nice internal storage for sure. I just moved from a 1,1 quad to a 3,1 ocho. I moved my 5870 to the new machine and performance is stellar. My point is, have you maxed out the graphics? I’ve seen a lot of Mac Pros out there with killer RAIDs but 2600XTs. If you’re golden there then yeah, sounds like a great internal RAID idea. Another thing to look into for high speed storage would be a PCIe SSD. You could also spend the money on some plugins or extra software. There are plenty of things worth buying, have fun!

Lance, I threw a 5870 in my 1,1 no problem. Just have to make sure you get the right cable (4 to 6 pin I think).
