July 15, 2013 at 1:08 am in reply to: up-converting 720 to 1080 for HDCAM transfer in FCPXExport an fcpxml out of FCPX. Open up Resolve, double click on “Admin” (you can always set up a proper DB with users later) and go to the conform tab on the bottom. Right click in the box in the upper right it’s something like “Timelines” I think, and select “Import XML” (should have other options like EDL). Select your FCPXML and change the sequence size to 1080P. I’m doing this off of memory, so things might be a little off. Select the color tab at the bottom and go to the icons above the lower middle box, about six or seven icons in you should get to the PTZR settings. Adjust the zoom if it’s off, hit the delivery tab, and choose FCP Round trip. If you’ve got funky names (:;/ etc) choose to change names, otherwise leave them be. Make sure the resolution is set properly, and choose and location for it to render out. Add the job, then start the queue. Afterwards there should be an FCPXML in the render folder that you can import into FCPX.
This is a LOT more trouble than just doing it in FCPX. X renders everything in 32 bit floating points with a damn good renderer, just not as great at resizing as Resolve. If you wanted to do this in X just duplicate the project (don’t include renders), change the resolution settings in the inspector to 1080P, and make sure Spatial Conform is set to fill for all of your clips. Much easier.

I use Sparse Bundles on a local RAID and have never experienced this problem, even with some bundles reaching over 2TB.

July 9, 2013 at 11:56 pm in reply to: OWC’s Larry O’Connor on the New MacPro – MacObserverNot to mention the biggest factor, GeekBench is a CPU intensive test. The new Mac Pro (in it’s first iteration at least) is a single socket 12 core processor, versus dual socket 6 cores. Apple’s move to a single socket system essentially halved their processing capabilities, but the chips have progressed to the point that they were able to swallow that loss. It’s widely believed that the CPU is becoming less important, and the GPU more. I think when weighing the pros & cons, Apple made a very future ready decision.
The biggest perk of the new Mac Pro to me is that they went with AMD instead of Nvidia. This means that developers will have to pay attention to OpenCL, and not just Cuda capable cards. The change is already noticeable, as Resolve 10 and Adobe CC both support OpenCL now.

They seem to think X2Pro is headed in a direction that could mimic the FCP7 media manager. My worry with this is that when a third party takes care of it (for $150) this could let Apple off the hook for doing anything about it. I’ve owned X2Pro since day one, but the reason I really want this feature isn’t for my files, but for the ones I receive. I do a fair amount of finishing work for others with Resolve and FCPX and I’m sick of getting 100GB of “used clips” for 30 second pieces…
