So after spending $100-200k on a projector, maybe another $500-800k on all the other ‘must-have’ critical gear to do a 4k DI and finish, establishment costs, wages etc, what kind of ROI period does one have in your part of the world? Is this still a viable business at these capital investment costs?

I ask because the distinction between consumer and pro gear is narrowing, DI and finishing budgets are shrinking, working with film originated images reduced to near non-existent, are we at a point where it’s simply overkill spending that much $$ on gear that simply doesn’t pay for itself, for clients that can’t tell them apart, and who won’t pay for the luxury.

June 8, 2013 at 8:07 am in reply to: Promise Pegasus drives

    Joe,

Thanks for your help. I unseated the drive basically to just reseat it in case that helped. That’s when I noticed it was a Seagate as I’m used to seeing Hitachi in the Promise Utility.

From your link on qualified drives it looks like these desktop drives (as in non-enterprise drives) have been tested and qualify for the Pegasus. Which is fine, as long as they work fine.

We noticed the drive failure on our unit on the 31st May. Being a weekend, we received a response from the Promise rep in India only on 3rd Jun when they sent us a link to register and report the failure. We’ve done that on the 4th or 5th June I think. And now we are awaiting a replacement.

Hope to have this sorted over the next week. And I hope there are replacement drives in my country and they don’t have to be shipped from overseas.

  • What if you export your timeline as one long clip and then check how much out of sync it is with the audio. If it appears to be 4%, then all you need to do is to take the exported 24fps mov and conform it to 25fps in Cinema Tools.

  • If you check the link in my post, that describes Resolve v10.
At the bottom of the page there’s a download button. Since the page was about Resolve v10, I assumed that the link was to download that version.

Didn’t know you could use EDLSpy to consolidate with handles. I’ve always used it to ‘pull’ entire clips.

I thunk Resolve 9.1 or later on Mac is required.

April 30, 2013 at 2:28 am in reply to: iMac with GTX 680MX for 4k Dailies

On an MBP i7 non-retina with a GTX750 we’ve seen over 36 fps for Alexa ProRes to DNxHD, about 20-25 fps for ArriRAW, and nearly that much for F65 RAW. So the GTX680 in an iMac will do the same or better.

For ArriRAW and F65RAW, the read speed of the disk holding the cam orig files also matters. Rreading from one drive, writing to another improves render speed. Reading writing simultaneously to a RAID5 can drop render speed at times.

I just noticed that the person who started this thread has the same name, Jason Silzle, as one of the hosts of this SAN forum. Is that a coincidence or are they one.

  • Carbon Copy Cloner can do hourly backups. And copy only modified files. And, archive whatever it’s overwriting.

In your first post you outlined your workflow. While it would be great to have one central storage from which your entire team works out of, it will be more expensive than the sum of individual attached storage boxes are.

I’m wondering, in your workflow where there seems to be the occasional sharing of data, do you really need everything central? Agreed, with individual storage, there will be duplication of media, but with storage costing what it does, who cares.
I’ve seen central storage boxes, well configured, also have huge masses of duplicate files if there’s no basic working discipline. And editors aren’t known to be the most disciplined of our species.

I think, for starters you need to make a good fast GigE network between your systems, then, give each system some good, RAID storage for critical files, fast SSD storage as ‘scratch space’ to store current files, and as a render drive. And, for project files, music, photos, build your DIY NAS who’s failure won’t bring your business to a halt.
