Didn’t see this Thread before I posted my question
    https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/21/864648

But in summary, with the Blackmagic Ultrascopes, I don’t like the inability to get a large view of at least one view (say, the Parade) as this is important in Color Grading.
I like my Harris VTM for this reason – ability to get large views and therefore, see great detail. But I don’t like that it doesn’t accept presets so you can load industry standards into it. That may be different on newer models; I don’t know.
And with some Tektronix models, I find there’s too much information at times. But they have lots of plusses. And a great history.

There is no one standard. This is partly due to the fact that there are both technical and creative aspects involved. From a technical point, many (most?) broadcasters do not like having black on the sides of 4×3 footage inside a 16×9 frame. So, if you have 16×9 SD footage and you blow it up to fill the 16×9 HD frame, you’ve crossed one hurdle. That also depends on how good a blowup you do, and whether there are noise or interlacing issues.
if you’re wondering about 4×3 into a 16×9 frame, many broadcasters won’t accept the black on the side, as this can been interpreted as a Blanking Error. So then you either blowup the 4×3 SD footage even further, to fill the sides, losing some of the height or, you take the creative option and fill in the black with a background. Some people take the original content and blow it up and blur it. Others will create a graphic background to suit the graphic style of the program.
Technical standards must be adhered to; creative solutions are up to you.

Why not use the Interplay ‘bins’?
What is your need to have MC bins?

One change going up to V7 is the addition of Frame Flex.
Do your Project, Sequence and ALL Sources have the same Format type and Field Something (forgot the Column Heading, where it display interlaced v. progressive.)

    Mac or PC?
On a Mac, once you’ve zoomed in, hold Option + Command gives you a Hand Tool; move the frame around to see the required area.
I assume there’s a similar access for PC – I don’t know the keys though.

On the 6.5 machine, is the Sequence rendered? Your description sounds to me like it might be rendering a lot of clips…

Why can’t we do that? (match frame graphics.)
It would be great if Avid would answer that. I don’t mean that in an antagonistic way; rather, I’d like to know from Avid why they think their Users don’t need that function.

September 2, 2014 at 1:50 am in reply to: Promote multiple PIPs to 3DWarp

[John Pale] “There is no visual difference that I am aware of between the PIP and promoted 3D Warp version”

I’m trying to find when/where I can see a difference, but the manual says:
“The additional quality that you achieve using the HQ rendering option depends on the effect and the footage you use to create the effect. For example, HQ rendering can often improve the quality of an effect that dynamically resizes an image or an effect on a clip with a lot of motion.”

I’m working on some sequences that came from FCP7. Automatic Duck converts Motion tab parameters into a PIP effect for Avid. I’ll simply promote the ones where I need the extra parameters.

Begs the question; is PIP irrelevant, today? ‘3D warp’ originally only worked with extra hardware and without that hardware, one was limited to PIP as a 2D DVE. I’m assuming – but don’t know – that 3D warp works on all Avid edit systems…

[Tal Benziman] ” I gotta start somewhere”

Best place to start is with the User Guide. Not only will it explain simple things like this (quicker than any forum) but it will whet your appetite for learning.
You can have it open while Media Composer is open and you’ll become a power-user in no time.
    Enjoy!
