Hope I am understanding your issue correctly, have you tried removing distort attributes ?
Right click on a clips that are incorrect, you can shift or option click more than one. Select remove attributes and uncheck distort. That should return everything to the correct aspect ratio.

You didn’t say if you were trying to import AVI files or if you had transcoded them to ProRes. This is a crucial step when dealing with some formats. FCP does not work well with various codecs including AVI, MP4 and H264.
As an example H264 files from a 5DMKII can be directly imported into FCP seemingly without issue. However you are more likely than not going to get all kind of errors ranging from sync issues to flashes on edits.

So with all those formats (and others) you must transcode your footage to ProRes before you edit with them as sync issues are very typical of the kind of problems you will get with these formats.

Transcode the AVI files to ProRes, you can use Compressor for example to do this. Then see if the sync issues persist. Let us know how you get on.

I switched to Adobe Encore which is part of the production suite bundle. Its kind of on a similar level to DVDSP, easy to learn and pretty much similar in terms of features to DVDSP with the added ability to create BluRay disks. Menu creation is fairly easy and the integration with Photoshop can be very useful. Adobe Media Encoder works well although I still use Compressor from time to time. I have used Encore for both DVD authoring and BluRay creation (along with a Samsung SE 506 burner.) I tried Toast but found it unreliable and kept getting failures trying to burn BluRay disks.
Probably 1 in 4 would complete. The others would hang during burning. Toast is a much more simplistic piece of software and offers less flexibility in menu creation.

Its a shame Encore is not available as a stand alone app as buying the whole suite is quite expensive however I was lucky enough to qualify for a student and teacher edition which saved a huge amount.

Just to add to Todds points.

Do the avi files play ok outside of FCP ? If so transcode them to ProRes (422 should be fine), keeping the same size and frame rate and then import those.

Its possible that the problem clip is somehow corrupt. What happens if you try importing it into FCP directly at normal speed? If that works perhaps export it as a new clip and try that one in Compressor. If it does not work you know the clip is the issue. Might be worth trying to open it in MPEG streamclip or QT7 but this may be problematic also depending on the issue.

You can legalise in Apple Color. But proper RGB legalising can be a can of worms. The best way is using hardware. Either Eyeheight or Harris worth a look but expensive option. You may be able to hire. Obviously designed for tape based output though so depends on your delivery format.

Hi Jon,
sorry it was perhaps not that helpful, I was sent the link and when I saw the number of posts decided that life was too short to read them all, so like you had a quick skim. At least its clear there are issues with that card and Apple seem to be looking at it as there are a couple of replies from Apple there.

Having looked more closely it does seem FCPX is the main candidate but they do mention other apps including Motion that are problematic.
I guess you have tried the old trashing prefs trick ? Doesn’t sound like its going to help judging by the potential scale of the issue but might be worth a long shot ? Digital Rebellions pref manager is easiest way. Not holding my breath on that solution though.

I have both running happily on both a MacPro and a MacBookPro. The installation of FCPX creates a folder called final cut studio in which the FCP Legacy apps are automatically placed. You will have to amend any shortcuts but all should be fine.
