    Hi Andy

You should post your question in the fcpx techniques forum as much more likely to get a reply there. https://forums.creativecow.net/fcpxtechnique

However I wonder if its the fact that you are using .m4a files. Try taking the original audio file and converting it into a 48k Wav file. Then edit and output using that.
I don’t think the fact that they are 44.1 is making a huge difference as both your example files in your post are 44.1 and the original sounds fine. But if you convert to .wav then you may as well change the sample rate too.

The FCPX one does sound like it has some sample rate issue as it almost sounds like there are “bits missing”.

Hope that helps – I dont know FCPX very well but would try that if it was FCP7 so may apply to X as well.

    best wishes

    Hi Chris

I see, I think i understand, at least I hope I do. Your post seems clear, perhaps I have the wrong end of the stick.

[Chris Batte] ” then I click ‘ok’ and then the program crashes, not allowing me the opportunity to change anything in the System Setting Dialog.”

What I was thinking was that perhaps the crash is caused by the inability to write to the waveform cache folder or perhaps even create the folder – hence the error in your first post which was

[Chris Batte] “I get an error message that reads: “The Waveform Cache Files Folder does not have read/write access. Please select a new folder in the System Settings Dialog or correct the problem on disk.”

Obviously you cant get to the FCP settings because by then it has crashed. However as I said the read write settings for that folder are in the OS not FCP. It seems pretty clear from the error message the issue is read write access of some kind.

If FCP has managed to create the folder Waveform Cache but can’t write to it then right click on it and use get info to change the read write permissions to all.

If it has not managed to create the folder before the crash then you can do so manually – the default place is usually in “Documents/Final Cut Pro Documents/Waveform Cache Files. This is along with all the other folders that FCP will create by default. (see image)

As I also said it might be that FCP is being refused permission to write by Gatekeeper. Just make sure that in Security and Privacy under the general tab that the correct option is set. You need either “anywhere” or “mac app store and identified developers” if its set to “App Store” that can cause read/write issues for anything not from the App store.

Many people here have installed FCP7 on Mountain Lion without issue. A few have problems but often it turns out that they did not do a clean install of the OS but an upgrade. Obviously ML is not officially supported but then FCP7 isn’t supported anymore in any event. I think the last official OS supported was Snow Leopard. I run it on Lion without any problems.

Thats all I can think of in terms of permission error possibilities. You have done everything else. Repair permissions, re-install. etc etc. What about doing a clean OS install ? I know you had a new machine and new installation and its a pain in the a*** but might be worth doing that. I think the “migrated” option you mention may not be the best way and can cause problems.

    Hope something there works

    best wishes

May 7, 2013 at 11:02 pm in reply to: Question about HD title I made in FCP

    Hi Jonathan

just out of interest I tried to recreate your set up just to see what happened. FCP does not resize well so I would not put the HD caption into an SD timeline.
Additionally as the other guys have said – SD is never going to look as good. Your clients suggestion of creating in HD and putting that in SD is not going to improve things. If anything its the worst option, as I said it does not resize well.
Any SD pictures or captions are never going to look as good as HD no matter what software you use. Compared to each other HD is always going to look superior.

However I did some screen grabs of a grey and maroon caption on white and there was no huge change in levels. The SD created caption looked much better that the HD resized.

The 3 examples are below, as you can see the SD created caption is not that bad, certainly not as clean as the HD but pretty acceptable.
The HD in HD timeline is obviously the best.
The HD resized shows poor quality edges and is the worst by far.
Not huge level differences though – they were all grabbed at 100% otherwise as Raphael says they will not look good whatever you do.

This is HD caption in HD timeline

This is SD caption in SD timeline not resized

This is HD caption resized in SD timeline

If you click on them and look at them in the viewer its easier to see the differences in quality.

    Hi Grant

https://www.grauonline.de/cmsimple2_6/en/?Solutions:HD_Video_Repair_Utility might be worth a look – not actually used it myself but someone told me about this a few weeks ago after fixing a corrupted GoPro file so I kept the link.

Hope it is useful – let me know – good luck, There is a demo mode that gives half size output so at least you can test.

There is a couple of other possibilities. Mountain Lion is picky about read write access. It has a thing called Gatekeeper that may be inhibiting the ability to write. Or perhaps more likely you just need to change the read write permissions on the Waveform Cache folder.
Right click the folder – select get info – then at the bottom of the window make sure the user that you are logged in as has read write permission. If you make it read/write for everyone should cover all possibilities.

    Hope that helps

  • Hi Don

While Ryan is correct and FCP7 was last supported on Snow Leopard it is not supported anymore anyway so it does not really matter.
It will run perfectly on Lion I have 2 computers ranging from 2007 to 2012 models and its totally fine on either.

The 7300 is fine under Lion but you need to change driver for ML but I would avoid ML really and stick with Lion.

Apparently you can buy it from apple if you call sales on 1-800-692-7753 and it is $20 – if thats no longer the case or you are not convinced then Sow Leopard would be the way to go.

  • Hi Bob

ProRes LT is totally fine, some people happily use that for DSLR footage. So should be totally fine for your AVI files and does not eat drive space.

  • Hi Don (posted this in FCP forum too)

I have FCP 7.03 running on an SSD on my MAC PRO which is older than your model. I run it on Lion without any issue. I also run Lion on a new i7 Macbook Pro
with FCP 7.03 also on an SSD. It takes about 10 secs to boot from cold.
Many here have successfully used Mountain Lion – there are quite a few posts on that. A few have reported issues on ML but often turns out they did not do a clean install.

Certainly Lion will give you no issues I am happy to recommend that. (Being 64bit some apps are able to use more ram and run more quickly however sadly that does not apply to FCP 7 as its 32 bit)

  • Hi Matthew

Final Print can save a pdf according to the webpage. https://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/finalprint

In OS when the print dialogue box comes up you have the option to save as pdf. Just select that and you can make a pdf very easily. (Button is bottom left)

Here is a screen grab of the pdf file.
