November 20, 2013 at 6:01 pm in reply to: Anamorphic footage?

Anamorphic is a term that describes a distorted image that appears to look tall and thin when viewed normally.
For example I live in a PAL country so for me it works like this.
If someone shot some standard def footage anamorphic ally it would be 720×576 pixels in size. That is the same size as a 4×3 image. However when viewed that way everything looks tall and thin.
So in order to see the footage normally you need to distort it, so in this case if you resize it to 1024×576 it looks like a normal widescreen image and is no longer distorted.
So on a 16×9 9 tv it looks normal and full frame on a 4×3 tv you need to squash the image so that it becomes letter boxed for it to look normal.
However it does not cut out the top and bottom rather it squashes the image creating the letterbox but all of the picture is retained.
If you then zoomed it in to lose the letterbox you would get a full frame 4×3 image but you lose the left and right sides not the top and bottom.

Hope that makes sense – this might help a bit

November 20, 2013 at 5:44 pm in reply to: 4K in FCP7 on 2008 MacBook Pro?

Editing 4K on that system is going to be an issue. You don’t mention what type of external storage you are using but you will need some fast external drives in a raid configuration. A single 200 gig drive is never going to be enough in terms of size or speed.
I would try editing in HD or maybe 2K and then conforming to 4K in either Color or Resolve depending on what you have.
That said your laptop may not run Resolve (not sure of minimum spec) so Color is possibly the only way to attempt it.

If you are really looking to edit 4K regularly long term then I would look at a new system and maybe use FCPX or CC to do that.
FCP7 is really too old to make it a smooth process but the conform option may see you OK for a while.

You may find this useful as a guide to the kind of workflow you couple adopt.

  • Can I just add to Dave’s question – What size are the images ? Often if you use images over 4000 pixels in any direction that can lead to the out of memory error occurring.

Totally OT but talking of removing videos, It reminds me of an incident that happened a few years ago.
I used to do bits of editing work from time to time for an Arabic channel based in London but run from Dubai called MBC.
One afternoon they were showing a natural history show about birds when they got a call from one of the owners in Dubai saying “I don’t like birds take this programme off”
They were forced to pull it off air and blamed “technical difficulties” for the loss of programme!

    true fact.

    Hi Ben

My first though is that you may have edited your sequence using H264 files.
Can you give details as to your format and codec etc.

    Hi Sophie

As Rafael says no need to convert, can I just add you are probably best off if you work in a 442HQ sequence as if you render everything to 4444 you will end up with some huge files and possibly experience some playback stuttering depending on the speed of your drives.

September 3, 2013 at 8:52 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Out of Memory Error

    Hi Tim

Are the desktop and laptop linked to exactly the same media and render files etc etc or are they running on a duplicate set of media ?
My reason for asking is that one of the myriad reasons for the annoying “out of memory” error can be a dodgy render file. But if they are both looking at exactly the same media that seems perhaps a little less likely.
What codec are you exporting from and to in your quicktime conversion ?

August 27, 2013 at 1:32 am in reply to: memory

When you say 900gigs of memory that refers to drive capacity.. While that should be adequate the message likely refers to the amount of RAM in the machine.
I think the absolute minimum required for FCP is 2GiGs for working with HD and I think 4 GIGs if you are trying to work with uncompressed HD. (although not sure how that machine would handle those kind of files)
So checking out how much RAM you have would be my suggestion in the first instance.

August 27, 2013 at 1:25 am in reply to: FCPX or a new Mac

Like Steve I have a MacPro 1.1 which has been upgraded to an 8 core machine with a Radeon 5770 and it too runs FCP7 flawlessly as well as V6 Avid.
It works perfectly with Lion but Mountain Lion is a no no. I did read a blog that explains how you can install Mountain Lion on a 1.1 but it seems like a process not for the feint hearted – see here https://www.jabbawok.net/?p=47 – Not sure I would try/bother though.

It’s not great with FCPX as you have noted as you really need the latest 64 bit hyper threading machines and a bunch of RAM to take advantage of its power.

The out of memory errors are probably caused by other reasons, often associated with, for example, large stills over 4K in the sequence, or corrupt render files. You will find lots of posts here suggesting reasons and fixes.

You might benefit from a bit more RAM but FCP can only access 4 gigs anyway being 32bit. In general, like the others, I would avoid spending much money on this machine, you should get your favourite FCP running without a hitch and as Andrew says don’t try to edit H264 always transcode to ProRes.
