Agree with Mark, most of what is going on there with the exception of speed changes looks like it was done in camera with little crash zooms and fast handheld moves to give the chaotic look.

February 4, 2013 at 4:13 pm in reply to: How do I roll Video Only in FCP X

    Hi David

I would be interested to know what you think of Bills suggestions about keywording, tagging and pre organising. He is totally correct about that being the best way to make X work and he knows X very well.

What I was wondering was if you feel you have time to do all that in some scenarios. My experience of being on the receiving end of news feeds cut in the field is that you have very little time, often minutes to just quickly top and tail a piece to camera, maybe add some B Roll and play out down the line.
I often work in quick turnaround sports news and we get feeds from correspondents where they literally trim a PTC from a presenter, leave gaps for B Roll that perhaps contain just V/O and play out. I then fill in the gaps with the appropriate B Roll, add a lower third or two, make sure everything is mixed and the file gets transferred to the studio for TX, often with minutes or even less to spare to air time.

There is no reason why you couldn’t cut those pieces in the field with X, but do you feel you would usually have time to exploit its excellent database options ?

February 4, 2013 at 3:49 pm in reply to: capturing Digbeta audio channels

    Hi Mike

Have you confirmed that the label on the box is correct ? The usual configuration for a finished Digibeta master is that there is a full fix on 1+2 and M+E on 3+4

It should be pretty easy to confirm this just by listening to tracks 1+2 in isolation and checking what it there. If thats a problem for some reason and just to make sure nothing odd is happening with your capture just capture a small section of just tracks 1+2 you could even turn the playback level of 3+4 to zero to make double sure no wires are crossed.

If you are still getting a full mix you know the label is incorrect.

If that turns out to be the case there is nothing you can do to in terms of separating dialogue from music.

I think that XDCam support came with FCP 6 around version 6.03 or maybe it was 6.04 – one of them. Anyway as long as you are not pre that version I think you should be fine.

February 1, 2013 at 11:08 pm in reply to: “100% or EBU Bars” for HD 25fps video

That is because with the 2 examples you give 100/0/100/0 represents 100% luminance and 100% chrominance and 100/0/75/0 represents 100% luminance and 75% chrominance so in each case the white would be the same.

It is when I read posts like this that I am so glad I work in UK Broadcast. 25P or 50i is usually as complicated as it gets.
I am always slightly confused by the drop frame non drop frame pull down and diverse frame rates you guys deal with everyday.
I have delivered shows to Nat Geo and History Channel US on HDCam SR but always have to get a tape op to double check my workflow when I do.

It is a pain that you only got the technical requirements half way through your edit but broadcasters all have fairly strict delivery requirements. This is a one of the big differences between doing stuff for the web, where there are few rules, to editing for broadcast, where there are many rules.

Because you picked mixed frame rate 4×3 SD footage to work with, before knowing the full requirements, you have kind of painted yourself into a corner.
With proper conversion the frame rate thing may be less of an issue but using 4×3 SD source footage in an HD timeline is hard not to notice.

It is true that once you create a master that is the correct frame rate, codec and HD it will in theory comply with the rules. However as Steve notes they are pretty likely to spot that this has all been uprezzed and will potentially reject your edit on technical grounds.

So sadly the choice is submit what you have done and run the risk of it being rejected. Or start again using stock footage that is HD and comply with the spec totally.

I know its a tricky one but thats about it as far as I can see.

January 31, 2013 at 12:12 am in reply to: Fade To Color

It sounds like you are trying to add a fade from black at he start of your video ? If so fade to colour is the wrong way around. You need a fade from colour – however an even easier way is, assuming it is the very first shot, just add a dissolve to the front of the first shot. That will fade from black by default.
Adjust duration until you are happy.
