The game console will have analog video outs that go to the TV.
Connect these to a video camera that has “analog/digital passthru or connect to a “analog to digital converter” like the “Canopus advc110”.
Your computer will see this as a camera ready to capture video.
Set your game sequence up and capture when ready.

We do this all the time and it works great. Games have settings that can get rid of information displays so only the game landscape is visible. not your radar or weapons count.
    See what I mean here.

If the game is on a computer …
    1) you need a video output to a camera’s input with dv passthru or record directly to tape.
2)If its on a laptop select the appropriate funtion have a cloned output thru the s-video out.

If it is a game console then connect . You’ll see it in your capture program…Hit capture.

we do this all the time for little war movies. works great.

  • Yes-
    I agree peter.
Although I organize the physical files in the explorer but also use the media tab so I can see the first frame.
Probably cuz I dont use the media manager

  • I use the trimmer almost exclusively.
I capture with scene detection for smaller clips. I make 3 digit acronyms for all tyhe associated sequences/chapters etc..
then say “add to media pool”
Since I have made folders in the project media tab before hand…any folder that is highlighted…the media will go there.
(Having all the clips in the project media tab is faster than in the explorer and I can see the first frame as well as it autoplays for me)
If I need it to play faster I whip it into the trimmer and slam the “L” key a few times)
I also grab a clip from the “project media” tab..left click, drag it onto the trimmer tab, let go. I can see the waveforms for brakes in audio to quickly find what I need. Drag/Highlight the area, throw it on the timeline.
    repeat process.
I set the length of my project with an “End” marker and build my sequences after that then slide them into place.

The beauty of the trimmer is that it remembers what you have looked at and what you have highlight/ used before.(dropdown history)Then I clear it every so often

Keeps the curser and focus right where I want it on the main project timeline
while I find, scrub, review the next event in the trimmer.

I think of it as a mini veg project right on top of the main one with out interfering with it.

I can use it for searching while the main timeline is still running.

I didnt use the trimmer in the past but found myself clicking, searching a lot more.
I do 1/2 hour tv reality style shows where we kind of make things up as we go and the trimmer has proved itself invaluable for previewing something quickly and finding a hole for it.

    I use bluff titler.
    Simple to figure out.
Its easy to get cheesy with it though.
Simple layout. All tools are right in front of you.
lightsourcing and texturing is simple to do.
I just rotate my text a little for depth..color it, Bevel it, add a moving light source, call it a day.
Exporting to uncompressed AVI to retain transparency makes huge file sizes.
12 seconds was about 585 megs.
Importing finished titles into vegas looked good and rendered good.
I recommend it for the $$
I tried about 5 other demos that were under $100 and I keep coming back to this one for timesaving titles outside of vegas’s capabilities.
    No issues or crashes !

March 10, 2007 at 9:49 pm in reply to: Need help with video to hard drive acquisition

    I say…
Recording all feeds to cheap mini DV cameras on tape in real time to not miss a thing. use the output firewire of camera in real time to a firewire switcher that feeds “DV rack” or “scenealyzer” then straight to external firewire hard drive for editing at a different location.
This way if the live edit is good then great but if you miss an important switch you’ll know exactly where it is on the tape. Go get it , pop it in the timeline and your back on . very little wasted time, if it all goes south (crashes etc. at least all is on tape. I say cheap miniDV cameras cuz your not using the lens part. only the converters and record transport. Save money !!
you can get 3 for the price of a DV deck.

March 9, 2007 at 5:40 am in reply to: Playhead Malfunction

My friend has just run into this issue.
when he connects his multichannel focusrite firewire soundcard and also connects the camera for external preview then the playhead freezes.
    same symptom.
Nothing has changed, never had a problem before that.
just started doing it the other day.
when he disconnects either one then he gets the playhead back !!

March 9, 2007 at 5:33 am in reply to: Audio Blips captured 6.0

    Just so I understand…
the VCR analog “outs” go to mini dv camera analog “ins”
    then firewire to computer ?
PLayback has audio beeps but no video dropout.

what happens if you import just from the mini DV camera’s tape.
    Is it clean then.
It might be the “pass thru’s” converter losing sync.
Do you have the “Enable device control” unchecked in preferances?
    Try another camera!
Is there any copyright protection stuff going on?

But I have done a pantload of importing and with very overdue defragged harddrives and never had a problem.
Of course defrag anyways, check again.
    good luck

March 9, 2007 at 5:23 am in reply to: Person-shaped gaussian blur

I know the movie. love the effect !!

    Gary’s right BEZIER MASKS !!

Once you get the outline built. change the tool to the “arrow” thens as the subject moves make the appropriate line adjustments as you go.
    soften both in, out.
    Should be easy enough.
I’ve done this before but for different looking results.

I bet you could do a height map type thing as well.
what ever is high enough will break the surface and show transparency to a watery blurry fisheye look that is underneath.
    I’m gonna experiment

March 6, 2007 at 5:29 pm in reply to: XP Pro vs Home for mac user?

I dont have an answer but my friend is trying to learn about doing this route as well.
He has a intel dual core macbook pro , wants to use Vegas and its family members.

There are several dual boot windows wrappers that are available.
Aside from bootcamp do you know or tried others that work well ?
the wrapper is the last part we need to try this.

I suspect XP Pro is the way to go in general.
I would be interested in your findings and test results.
We intend to hammer it hard to see how she handles.
