Thanks for than Ben,

I have plenty of RAM and my system is fully specd. I have been using the programs for a number of years (its not a new machine).

I do not get an error message- The Program window appears (where the loading text normally appears) and just freezes up. I have to force quit the application which is ‘not responding’

go to view and then click on audio scrubbing (so it appears ticked).

the default shortcut command to turn this on / off is Shift and S.

I sometimes accidentaly action this command when I mean to press Apple and S to save my project.

Control click the end of the clip and choose ‘add cross disolve’ then render the clip and you are done. if you control click the fade on the timeline you can alter the speed of the transition. Simple
