  • Missing information from master tape

Posted by Neil Gregory on March 27, 2006 at 9:53 am

    Hi,

I am capturing a 4:3 project from a client to make into a DVD. I have noticed that there is information missing down the vertical sides of the frame (looks approx 6-10 pixels each side. This is not visible on a monitor but is clearly visible when played on a DVD (especially when changing from a full frame menu to the footage).

I think this happened when the client played out the master to tape.

    Does anyone have any Ideas?

    Thanks in advance-Neil

You’ve got exactly three choices. You can either ignore it, scale up the footage on your timeline to compensate, or crop during your MPEG encoding, which essentially does the same thing as scaling on the timeline but without as much conrol.

If you scale it, obviously only scale it horizontally or you’ll create field mush. I vote for ignore it. The pixels should be well under the overscan of a TV. You could also add black to the menus sides so they match.
