Thanks for your response. I must admit I do come from an Avid background. But this is my third film with FCP, however the other 2 were shot on film so the work flow was more familiar. I hope you can bear with me a little… are you suggesting capturing from the masters uncompressed? I don’t have the drives for that. If I captured from DVCPROHD with only one timebase to consider, how would the audio people conform the original sound? -
The HD code and the SD code don’t match – the SD code is continous.

Thanks for stating that it’s okay to cut a 24p show in a 29.97 environment. I’ve also cut several made for TV movies doing this and never had a problem.
I’m about to start another movie and I’m trying to figure out if buying a capture card would enable me to capture (down converted) DVcam at 23.98, thereby eliminating the need to use Cinema Tools reverese telecine. Does anyone know about this process? -
I’m aware that no capture card is required to capture from DVCAM. The pulldown can be done with Cinema Tools.
But isn’t it also an option to use a capture card to perform the 3:2 pulldown on the fly while capturing? This would cut out the step of using Cinema Tools.
I’m just exploring options… -
I forgot to mention the offline clips will be captured from downconverted DVcam tapes.
So, if I understand you correctly, a capture card, such as Kona or Decklnk can only perform 2:3 pull down while capturing from DVCPRO HD? That doesn’t make much sense (to me). Couldn’t it perform this with a DVcam source? -
I’ve cut 16 features and TV movies over the years using Avid, FCP, Media 100 and Ediflex and Callaway, so I kinda know what I’m talking about. Me thinks you over complicate things with your fancy tech talk!

If I use Cinema Tools to create 23.98 files, when I output the cut to DVcam for viewing purposes, will the image have a slight stutter because it’s not being “pulled up”?
I think I would perfer to buy a capture card to capture with pulldown on the fly but I’m not sure what I need or if that’s even a solution. I have a mac with pci-e (the model just before the intels) -
I’m not sure right now what format the DP is shooting on, but whatever it is will be transfered to D5, then the DVcams will be made from that. Does it matter what format DP is shooting? All I want is to be able to edit offline (from DVcam) in a 24 frame environment and output an EDL when I’m done that’s acurate.
