optins for editing TV movie
I’m going to be editing a TV movie on FCP. I will be working offline. When I’m done we’ll perform an online edit with an EDL somewhere else. The movie will be shot in HD 24p.
They way I see it I have 3 options:
1 – Capture at 29.97, edit movie, then convert EDL to a 23.98 EDL using Cinema Tools.
2 – Capture at 29.97, then use cinema Tools to pulldown the clips, edit in FCP in 23.98.
3 – Buy a third party capture card that can perform 2:3 pulldown while capturing. Edit in 23.98.
I’m kind of interested in option #3, but I’m not sure what to buy.
Has anyone had experience with option #3? -

Transferred to what format of HD? What will be the frame rate on the HD masters? How will you capture the footage? Downconverted DVCAM tapes? Directly from the source tapes?
The biggest question is, how will you online…and what is the frame rate of the source masters and off the final online. that determines quite a bit.
If 23.98, and you will be getting DVCAM dubs, then capture at 29.97 and reverse telecine to 23.98. Then your EDL will reflect real numbers without having to convert anything. Plus you can send 23.98 out to a monitor or deck for making screener dubs. You can edit all of this with firewire 400 drives or internal SATA drives.
Option 3 requires getting a capture card, like the Kona 3 or decklink Extreme HD and capturing the footage as DVCPRO HD. You’ll need firewire 800 drives or internal SATA or an external SATA Raid. And you’ll need to rent the HD deck.
Typically what is done is DVCAM downconverts that you capture and reverse telecine.

I forgot to mention the offline clips will be captured from downconverted DVcam tapes.
So, if I understand you correctly, a capture card, such as Kona or Decklnk can only perform 2:3 pull down while capturing from DVCPRO HD? That doesn’t make much sense (to me). Couldn’t it perform this with a DVcam source? -
No capture card is required if you are capturing from DVCAM. Just a DVCAM deck, it connects via firewire. The Capture card is if you are capturing from the original HD sources.
I thought you wanted to know the option for capturing from the HD sources, so I mentioned the card and capturing as DVCPRO HD for you offline. But you have DVCAM tapes so you just need to capture them via firewire and reverse telecine either with FCP or Cinema Tools…if you HD masters are 23.98fps.

I’m aware that no capture card is required to capture from DVCAM. The pulldown can be done with Cinema Tools.
But isn’t it also an option to use a capture card to perform the 3:2 pulldown on the fly while capturing? This would cut out the step of using Cinema Tools.
I’m just exploring options… -
I don’t know…never done it. On the two projects I did work on where I needed to get to 23.98, I just reverse telecined. Oh, except for the one that was shot 24PA with the DVX100, then I could use the Advance Pulldown removal when capturing. You can try that. It is an Easy Setup. Just to test.

Yes – this works with our Kona cards, Decklink cars, and Io stations – If you make a custom digitize preset at 23.98 fps (dupe your normal 29.97 DV and just change the timebase) and capture all your clips on the *A* frame, it’ll 3:2 remove on the fly. HOWEVER, in your clip it’ll still be referencing 30fps timecode – so you’ll see it going :04 :05 :07 :08 :10 or something like that. So you’ll need to Modify Timecode of your clips and restripe them with 24fps code before editing.
