I own a 650d as well. It’s really just not capable of getting sharper, more crisp images. I definitely use cinestyle to get more out of a dynamic range and allow for more cinematic images. Then I color correct and grade the crap out of it. Though you have to keep in mind, the 650d creates highly compressed files; so you’ll easily hit a point where you can’t grade anymore without getting digital artifacts.
Your best bet is doing some solid color work. There’s a degree where you can sharpen images in post but it’s a fine line for sure.

Sounds to me like you’re a man with particular tastes (which is a very good thing) but looking for simple solutions. I think instead of looking for LUTs and simple ways to get those high end looks, you should continue color grading and exploring that side of post production. It doesn’t need to look identical to that perfect film look. I’d argue the only way to really get the film look is to shoot on film. Everything else is an artistic choice inspired by the film look, but not the film look. Find the look that suits you, but don’t get bogged down in trying to make it perfectly match images from movies that cost millions of dollars to make.
And also, it may not be LUTs or anything of that nature that’s making you say it’s just not quite what you’re wanting visually. I had a t3i back in the day, and you sometimes just have to realize the limitations of your camera. In order to get a better look, you may just have to invest in a better camera and some nice lenses.
I know you’re claiming to be an amateur, but most amateurs I would say have no clue what a LUT is as well as curve adjustments. So I think you’re someone with bordering professional tastes but trying to get away with amateur equipment. You may need better equipment to satisfy your needs. But I guess it depends what level of DSLR you’re using.

October 26, 2015 at 3:07 pm in reply to: How to take out a background in a video of a moving person and put the person in a other background.Good question. For something like those Drake vines, it seems like it could be difficult, as his clothes and skin are taking on the same lighting colors as the background.
The answer is having to rotoscope him out. I would probably try After Effects’ rotobrush tool.
Also, props to whoever took the time to roto out Drake for those hilarious spoof videos. Unfortunately, I don’t think there was an easy and quick way to do it. But if so, I’d like to know as well!

October 2, 2015 at 10:23 am in reply to: file transcode suggestions for lo res editingYeah, Premiere is pretty flexible when it comes to media formats. A great deal of the people I know using it are still using all their beloved ProRes codecs. And I can fortunately say, I’ve never had any issue running H.264 in Premiere. In fact, in several instances, I’ve used H.264 as my proxy files when pulling from higher cameras. But if you’re wanting to work offline so you can temporarily downres images, I imagine ProRes Proxy would be a superb choice. As good as any really.

September 3, 2015 at 2:37 am in reply to: What are the problems with archiving on external hard drives?I have personally never had any real issues with archiving to external hard drives. LTO tapes I’m sure are the much safer solution. With technology changing so often, LTO tapes could likely be used in a much longer time, while, with rapid changing technology, those external drives could become outdated and unusable on newer systems.

I wonder if it may have something to do with aliasing? Is the text coming from a graphic image or straight out of After Effects’ text tool?

August 26, 2015 at 8:35 pm in reply to: Another “How much should I charge for” question from recent graduate studentDefinitely can’t be afraid to charge too much. I’ve found that I’d much rather work with 2 well paying clients than 10 low paying clients. The low playing clients also tend to be the ones who want a ton for nothing and have ridiculous expectations. Be willing to hold out for the better clients.

It will definitely help to have some kind of green material over the screen. Some kind of clean, saturated green paper (carefully cut to the screen shape) should work okay.
Definitely want to consider movement. If there is any movement, you may want to consider putting tracking marks on the green (possibly a contrasting color to the green, such as magenta).
And as far as compositing, in order to sell that it’s actually there, make sure the resolution of the tv screen image matches that with the rest of the scene (sharpen or blur accordingly to get a close match). I’ve seen many times where the screen is way too sharp in comparison to the rest of the scene, or vice versa. And it also helps to have it interacting with the rest of the scene. Such as reflections or the light subtly shining on nearby surfaces. All of these will help sell the effect.

What kind of keyboard are you using? I had a similar issue years back. Since Macs often use the F1-12 buttons as other functions (adjust screen brightness, volume, etc), sometimes you need to hold down “fn” and then press f9 or whatever f# button you need.
