Well, excuse me for trying to help!

My screen is fine, your English as poor as your manners.

Your first frame isn’t deinterlaced, it’s a freeze frame. Have you checked to see if the very last frame of the insert is missing? I’ll bet it is.

Sounds to me like you need to change your offset by a frame (Final Cut menu>System Settings>Playback Control) . That’s what it’s there for.

Not a bug, a settings error.

We’re all waiting on 3rd party hardware guys to come up with adaptors, card readers etc for P2. Hopefully the new, faster EC34 will attract some P2 adaptors.

All the gear comes with the same operating temperature guidelines – cameras, drives, tapes etc. It’s just the manufacturers covering their butts over extreme conditions under which they cannot viably test (can’t imagine them sending an engineer and a drive to Mt Cook or Ayers Rock to make sure)

If you’re going to use the gear under such extremes it’ll probably work fine – even if you need to use some kind of insulated cover – but the onus is on you to test before you commit to shoot.

January 5, 2006 at 9:34 pm in reply to: Filmouts or D-Cinema

Response to the original D-Cinema post! (Ed, you need to click on the “Add New Post” link in the top right hand corner instead of hijacking someone else’s thread – not cool)

    Anyway, back to the thread.

Thanks very much for the considered, expert and invaluable advice.

Certainly when editing on an NLE it’s a cinch to duplicate the locked-off sequence and grade once for digital out with a separate grade for the film out.

I’m a big proponent of leaving all the film out stuff until you have a distributor asking for it. It’s a great way to save money when chances are you’ll only get a DVD release. The studios have quite an investment in keeping indies out of the theatrical loop so the odds are not in your favour regardless how good your movie may be (not confusing good with commercial)

Thanks once again for the great post!

January 5, 2006 at 1:07 am in reply to: Any Good Footage?

There’s some footage from a guy in Japan. Go over to http://www.dvxuser.com and check it out.

Some of it has been recompressed but there are some direct outputs from FCP there where you can get an idea what the camera can do.

Of course, if Luis would consider posting some of his test footage in original MXF format, (or anyone else for that matter) that’d be fantastic. I can’t stream from my server but I’d be more than happy to host the clips for download.

    I second that!Very informative.

One question. You say you’ve shot on Varicam. How does the mosquito noise in the shadows compare to one? I know the image won’t be anywhere near as sharp but just curious about the shadows….

January 2, 2006 at 7:44 am in reply to: Updating FCP/Mac Editing system for HVX-200

Gary’s right of course. From the FCP specs:

    Q. Do I need a Power Mac G5 to edit HD?
    A. No. You can edit HD on any Power Mac G4 with a 1GHz or faster processor and at least 1GB of RAM.

Please excuse me, I’m a little rusty;-)
