    Hi guys,

Proof is in the pudding. From what I saw at DV Expo, they are no more closer than Focus Enhancements, in fact Focus is closer, I could at least play back from the FE FS-100.

    Be careful,

    Jan,
What? You guys obviously have a deal with Focus. So you say “be careful” when someone else
has a product that advertises the same function. Does Panasonic agree/admit that it does the same thing?
Or does Panasonic say “be careful, this product doesn’t do what it advertises”?

    Hi Ed,

Didn’t mean to sound like I was dissing the product and saying that it was or was not less than. What I meant was, to be careful about the fact that they say that it is going to be finished by the end of January but that just might not be true. From what I saw, they had a long way to go. If they do it correctly it could be competitive with the Focus, maybe, only as I am not certain about the rest of their reliability stats and the full design implementation for their product. I do have a document from Focus, under an NDA, that says how theirs will work.

What you don’t know is how the Focus Enhancements works so that when you go to compare the two how do you know if they are competitive products. They do look similar but are they really? Give the market place a little time on these things and don’t budget it in for a shoot that you are planning in February. That is what I meant by being careful.

Heck I am being inundated with emails about availability of the HVX and they have shoots starting in two weeks, with the question, what can I do to get them a camera. All I can say is just be careful about planning something important about a product that is tied to another new product. Delivery can slide.

    Hope that clarifies,

    Jan

Thanks Jan, that *does* clarify things.
Ed, who doesn’t upgrade in the middle of a project, or hold up a project waiting for the next *best* thing 🙂

Most of these products are certified by the manufacturers- How is this any different than Apple insisting on certification for hardware in FCP?
If nothing more than to maintain the highest possible workflow specs– some of these companies spend significant dollars to make sure that their products are within the specifications, and then they test the hell out of them. Just to make sure they don’t fail when you need them the most.

So I tend to think when a MFG Rep says watch out, that to me means “buyer beware”.

I am constantly frustrated by people that want in video everything for nothing. R+D for products like this are time consuming and expensive. I have worked in video since it was VERY VERY expensive. MY first HD suite cost over $170K for a mac, monitor, a kona card and 1T storage. Not even a deck in sight. The same basic setup with 2X the storage is now just under $20K in just under 5 years.

There is always a penalty to be on the front of the tech curve, sometime you hit a wall when the path ends, and sometimes you get rear ended when you are not going fast enough.

    Gary,
Are you channeling Bob Zelin now? “Back in the old days before electricity, when our TVs ran on kerosene” 🙂
I think Jan explained what she meant pretty clearly.

Okay, here’s another caution about the CitiDisk — apparently a careful reading of the specs may lead one to believe that it does not, in fact, stream HD. Other boards are reporting that it sounds like it can only capture DV, and that there is no provision for live capture of HD. Instead, the HD functionality they present is actually only for use when offloading the contents of a P2 card.

I looked through the page briefly and couldn’t determine one way or the other, but I didn’t try too hard either.
