[Chris Smith] “A Mac?
LOL, had to. Sorry. Ahem.”
Chris, while you are making such wonderful suggestions, would you mind buying me one, too? ;o)

I don’t eally get what you are trying to say here. if the billboard is interfering with your other stuff, simply make it come in later. Not sure what you are doing, but it may be inevitable to create a few manual keyframes. The tracker who can track invisible things has yet to be invented.

Also do check your disks for flaws. Some of those problems may be related to some invalid references lingering in the MFT.

Like Arndt said, check your textures. Either they are not there or it’s possible both models use identical textures for different materials and one interferes with the other. In that case, you’ll have to check each material, rename it suitably and check all texture tags in separate scenes before merging them into one. From what I gather, it sounds like you are trying to import two unprepared 3DS files or something before cleaning them up which would explain the problems (in 3DS files, textures are stored as absolute paths with non-unique IDs).

December 28, 2006 at 1:12 pm in reply to: Making a matte white object in white room with soft shadows (newbie Q)Actually those materials should never be fully white or they’ll “blow out” on rendering and become to bright. A very light gray is a much better choice. To get Radiosity/ Ambient occlusion combined with other passes, you need to composite them. The easist way to do so is to simply use “Multiply” mode on the shadow layer e.g. in Photoshop or After Effects. You can also create a proper Alpah chaneel easily from it there.

Yes, that would be a sensible route to take. Just take care to not mes up the composition lengths and framerates.

That’s not really possible – the math is no problem, but the Hue/ Saturation effect uses compound controls which are not separately accessible. You can use the levels effect, but you still need to have sensible values for your expressions, so it’s not really easier than keyframing manually. Your best bet is to tint your footage using solids applied in different blendmodes. Thes can easily be staggered by using the “Sequence Layers” keyframe assistant.

You could settle for an “American Night” as it is called here in Europe which is basically applying some sort of blue filter on top of your footage. This can be done easily by using a blue solid in Overlay mode for instance.

If you need to store values temporaily, you can also use either expression controls or text layers. The disadvantage in the latter case is of course that you always have a lot of excess baggage for converting variables to strings and back.

As a workaround, you may try and map some shapes onto multiple instances of the CC Cylinder effect to create the illusion of a more or less closed tulip blossom. Beyond that, you possibly can’t forego doing it in a real 3D app (where it’s pretty easy-peesy).
