  • Hehe, that’s indeed strange. But regardless, it’s definitely more AVid’s fault than it is a QT problem or the other apps. ;O)

Just like Chris said, use RSMB Pro combined with a motion vector pass. Should be no problem at all. The only real trick is to adjust the motion duration value in C4D’s rendering options or otherwise you will not get enough differentiation in the motion pass. Also always use 16 bit images to avoid some of the “bumping”/ smear Chris mentioned.

December 27, 2006 at 11:16 am in reply to: Cinema 4D vs Lightwave on mac

The question of which tool to use largely hinges on what you are actually producing, not so much performance on a given platform. Your main concern seems to be the rendering, and that is really the part where neither of the two apps can win (compared to other programs). Both have their share of legacy issues and quirks. If you want quality, go for Lightwave. At the moment only finalRender for C4D can give comparable flexibility and results to Lightwave’s node editor, but it’s not available for Mac yet, so it’s a moot point. Texturing and adjusting materials are infinitely easier in Lightwave, even in the old layer based surface editor.

As for speed – well, I’m sorry to say so, but C4D being faster is a myth that does not live up to reality upon closer scrutiny. It’s only fast if you use average antialiasing, no motion blur and no other fancies – but in such situations LW is similarly fast. As soon as you depend on 3D motion blur or similar things, C4D slows down to a crawl. I daresay LW in those situations behaves much better. Not that it’s muchg faster, but at least it’s predictable. Also do not forget that LW’s rendering part is currently being reworked quite heavily and LW 9.2, which is not far away, will bring even more improvements and speedups.

Finally, and please forgive me here, if you’re really serious about 3D, make your life easy and get a PC. You certainly can work on a Mac, but there are any number of OpenGL issues, many plugins are not available for it (like finalRender and an assortment of really useful free tools, both for LW and C4D) and a few other things that might pose a problem. There are also certain things under development (like a VRay bridge for C4D) that will take a long time before they wil lever come to a Mac and if you’re really interested in quality, you will not want to criple yourself and loose that potential.

  • If you are experiencing problems, try downgrading your Quicktime. Avid systems do not work well with QT 7 (for whatever reasons). We were able to heal all our pains by going back to 6.5.

December 26, 2006 at 10:21 am in reply to: opening DVD and autoboot at the same time?

Actually you can get an autostart from any disc if it contains a single file of a filetype, regardless whether it is executable itself or not. This does not need any extra software installed. The key to success is not to call any specific filetype but to call its handler in the autorun.inf. I’m not sure of the correct syntax off the top off my head, but it should be something like

    rundll32.exe /run clsid224094795795766666777

    or

    rundll32.exe /run DVD-file

I’m sure it’s properly documented somewhere on the Microsoft Tech pages. The only thing is, if no program is installed, you get a cryptic message saying that a handler doesn’t exist and all that blahblah which is probably even more confusing than nothing happening at all.

December 26, 2006 at 10:11 am in reply to: different menus, continuous background music?

[marcbrak] “Wouldn’t it perhaps be possible to load a new visual layer containing the other menu over the one containing the background audio? perhaps even by using apha to make it “appear” ?”

No that’s not feasible. If it were a normal timeline, you simply could have it play continuously and jump to the chapter markers, but this doesn’t work with menus. You can however have multiple menu subpictures and change their button assignments (but not change the bg), but in your case it’s not going to do you any good – this requires massive parameter programming which is not available. So whichever way you twist and turn it – you are screwed and can’t carry thru your idea. Just fade the audio on and off and build individual menus. Not perfect, but even the big pop stars have to do their concert DVDs this way so you’re in good company.

No idea. What program are you using? The state of the audio should not matter to the video as they are unrelated and treated separately, but maybe your program does not allow this level of freedom.

  • Yes, if you really want to spend so much money, it’s a wiser choice. I myself have never been a friend of those extremely pricey suites for various reasons, but if you take the plunge, Sapphire certainly will certainly boost your creativity more. Tinderbox is still nice, but the effects are very “finalized” and cannot be combined as flexibly. And I agree with Leo – they are very specific and thus some of them will catch a lot of dust on your hard drive because you won’t use them.
