[Toby Heslop] “though when i draw illustrator files in my version of illustrator outside the artboard and import into AFX, it crops my files to the art board, how can i make my illustrator files read outside the artboard in AFX.”

Has to do with the settings you choose for your file (PDF compliant or not and so on).

[Toby Heslop] “also my illustrator files inside after effects show up with jaggy edges ll the time, is the way to solve that by selecting continuesly rasterise in the time line, cause i have done that but it does not seem to make much difference!”

Well, that of course only works for vector elements. Bitmap elements embedded in your file will not benefit from that. You need to import them separately in AE and place them where they should be. Also some artsy stroke types never seem to work that way.

Set the shading to outside/ front. By default both sides of the sphere will be shaded which in you case is of course undesirable. Once you have that you only need to adjust the in- and outpoints to create the illusion.

I’d say the odds are slim. I’m not aware of any Mac-based app being able to do so, but for PC there’s several options.

Since you are on a Mac, you will not have that magic /3GB switch, but the rest of what jimmybee said is true. At best AE should use 3GB or something. This has been discussed quite a bit (for Windows systems, anyway), so if you do a search, you wil lfind. Look for a very long-ish and elaborate post by Steve Forde in particular.

No. Both are “Professional” exclusive features.

No. They are completely different beasts and for the time being AE does not know how to do those custom OpenGL/ DirectX pixel shaders.

December 29, 2006 at 10:04 pm in reply to: Creating DVD Menu Pricing

Do you wanna eat bread and water, an average daily meal with a nice steak and a beer or caviar and wine? This is more of a generic business question and if you yourself don’t know what you wanna earn to make a decent living, no answer will be good enough. All you need to do is to figure in how many days it will take you, how many people are working on it, how much electricity your computer consumes in that time etc. Then you’ll arrive at amount X to which you can add taxes and so on plus your revenue margin. Everything else is sheer speculation since anything is possible – your client may pay lots of bucks for a template based menu or he may pay only a meagre amount even for the most elaborate custom stuff.

December 29, 2006 at 9:57 pm in reply to: AE export for Encore

Please forgive me, but using any of the presets in the MPEG-II exporter isn’t particularly efficient or clever. Moreover it’s not particularly smart of your client to let you fly blind – he should at least give you some info what data rates he expects or how much space on the disc your work is actually allowed to occupy, which to me means that he doesn’t know his way around Encore very well, either. You can check your problem with the demo of Encore, but since you don’t know what your client is doing, it may not help you much – it may work for you, but he still may have problems. So to cut it short: Get an external harddrive, put your work in various MPEG-II compressions on it along with a non-transcoded version as an AVI or MOV, plug said disk in your clients workstation and try if any of your assets imports. If everything fails, the clean files should get in even if it means having to transcode from inside Encore.

  • Like Dave said – the problems are of your own making. CT will do exactly what it says – it will collapse transformations which translates to anchor point position, position, rotation and scale. Nowhere is it written that it will pass thru lights or other fancies and since AE will still see any collapsed compositions as a single layer, it’s only logical it will assume a certain default anchor position. I’m not saying it’s perfect and AE definitely acts pretty dumb and slow on anything remotely complex in 3D space, but it should not be too difficult to understand the concept.
