  • Nope, no other render option and I don’t see a problem with that(When would you want to save a comp with tons of layers except you needed a single frame for print or other stuff? It occurs so rarely.). Unlike I suspected, your problem is really at the PS side. Version 6 does not have the behavior of automatically detecting Alpha. Time to upgrade. You can, however, still create an action. Just hit the record button on your action palette and do the following:

    a) Double-click on the layer in the layers palette to turn it into a floating layer.
    b) Ctrl+click the Alpha channel in the channel palette. A selection should appear.
    c) Apply this selection as a layer mask by clicking on the mask icon in the layers palette.
    d) Now add all the actions needed for aplying the style as written in my original reply.

You should end up with a action that you now can batch-apply to e.g. a Targa sequence.

A tutorial about plugin coding? You can’t be serious! I doubt that anyone would be willing to share his knowledge about AE’s SDK beyond explaining a few basics. After all, that’s why companies make money from selling plugins. If it were that simple, the would be out of business.

  • I think you must be doing something wrong. I suspect you are using some footage and didn’t remove/ hide it before rendering out the text layers you put on top of it which of course would be the necessary thing to do. I don’t sse any problems at the PS side of things. PS automatically recognises Alpha channels even if they aren’t named properly. Applying your effects should be easy. Just create a style and save it as a preset to your palette. After that all you need is an action to batch-apply this preset to all your images.

Sure you can rename them like any effect. Select the name and hit return. After you’ve succesfully renamed your effects, find some dark corner and slap yourself a few times for not RTFM. 🙂 Sorry, couldn’t help it.

Are you sure you have set your clipboard format in illustrator correctly? It should be the ADB-something, not PDF compliant.

Im sure you’ll find some info about licensing there as well as where to get the official trailers (which in my opinion are quite poor, so why bother?). Capturing them from DVD without permission would be a major copyright infringement, so i would advise against it.

  • Perhaps your activation is screwed? If you restored your files from a disc image, this data might not have been included since it is hidden in sectors normally not used by the OS. try to re-install and then re-activate.

July 15, 2005 at 5:05 am in reply to: particle playground or particular?

[qeffects] “Basically I would like to draw a bezier path with the pen tool and set particles to flow along this path with the ability to control particle velocity, look, size, direction etc…
I typically create particle motion in 3d, but would like the same kind of control in AE to create similar effects in the 2d world. Ideally, I would like to be able to use any object as a particle.

    For instance:

several fish swimming up a curvy stream,
or a grainy liquid traveling inside a curvy tube. “

Both particle Playground and Particular can do that, but with limited control. Neither of them offers a tool like e.g. the Path Flow in Maya or Path Wind in Lightwave. You have to manipulate the air resistance, inherited parent motion and a few other things to do that. You will also have to live with the fact, that both tools only have dumb particles (no inter-particle forces and collisions) which makes swarming/ flocking a bit tricky. Similarly, collision detection is limited and I would forget that idea with the fluid in a tube right away… Other techniques work much better in this particular case.

It’s difficult to give advice based on your vague description but I think Particular is the way to go for that kind of work. You’d still have to learn how to use it, though, even if you don’t really have the time. There are no known issues if you’re using AE 6.5 and the latest version of the plugin.
