You probably need to disable the “color profile” in photoshop. Color profiles cause the colors to appear differently in photoshop than they really are.”

Yeah, that could be possible. Other than that also simply try another CoDec. Certain CoDecs will automatically limit color ranges without telling you anywhere.

Most likelyy your layer is too large. AE will clip the pixel buffer for it if it needs to display too much of the layer at a time. You need to split it up into sub-compsand then maybe re-assemble it. Could also be an OpenGL problem, so switch to the old adaptive resolution preview to verify.

  • Hey, nice one. Looks more like light refracted through ice cubes, though.

Ahem, a Quicktime movie won’t play at standalone players at all. You need to convert/ transcode it to MPEG II and then create a proper DVD data structure for it. This is called authoring. Though I only work on PC, you Mac guys should have it much easier – iDVD is part of OSX and if you are on a more pro oriented road you can always get DVD Studio Pro.

Not natively with AE. You need a color sampler expression helper plugin. Digital Anarchy’s Anarchy Toolbox contains one as well as the no longer available Useful Effects and Expression Effects.

The simple way is to use a copy of the original footage on top and then set the matte mode of the lower layer to “luma matte”. This will kind of work, but you will need to adjust the alpha since noramlly this way you cannot get real-looking transparencies. The other method is to “unmultiply” the brightness. The assumption is, that a bright pixel will cover up any other pixels behind and thus all pixels of less brightness are transparent or semi-transparent. In a way it’s similar to luma mattes, but since it uses different formulas it yields better results. Plugins for this are e.g. XMult (free), Walker Effects Alpha Tool or Knoll Light Factory Unmultiply.

Well, that’s real pyrotechniques. It’s dangerous and mostly illegal for someone without proper training and permission, so I’m not giving any advice. Let’s just say there are enough tips and tricks on how to blow up your house, burn your face and chop of your fingers already on the net, so look eleswhere. The mattes can actually be created quite easily using luma mattes and unmultiplied luma channels.

September 4, 2005 at 8:56 am in reply to: 16 bit rendering

Technically you shouldn’t have a problem. Most 8-bit effects are “Render” effects that would not need true 16 bit – a red circle is always a red circle, no matter whicht bit depth. All other 8 bit effects will simply just look the same in 16 bit mode, with all the good and bad sides this may have. I’d be more worried about quality and the look of your comp. Due to the greater fidelity in 16 bpc some effects work a bit differently which results in a different look e.g. of the antialiasing or soft edges on masks that blend together with underlying layers. Effects such as Hue/Saturation or Colorama will also clip colors in 8 bpc but render just fine in 16 bpc. So from my point of view there is little point in working in 8 bit and then rendering in 16 bit simply because you cannot judge the quality properly.

Well, I find your approach a bit strange, b_alen, to say the least, and if I were your client, I’d be very dissatisfied if I found out – it definitely is going to show in loss of quality in many places. Like the others said, you should resort to cooperating with some decent post house. More specifically, you should not try to re-render any of the footage, if not need be. So you should only extract the snippets that you need to touch-up at maximum quality (uncompressed, Animation CoDec or similar lossless CoDecs) and leave the rest untouched. Presumably this approach will also resolve some of your resource problems, unless your “snippet” is the entire 2 hours. The rest you can extract at a lower quality for preview purposes only. Still, if you can, try to get a hold of the original tapes rather than ripping. Then you could have them digitized on an editing system and render out your AE stuff with Alpha channels and have it overlayed on the edit suite. This is much, much cleaner. If ripping is your only option, buy some cheap hard discs and store your stuff as described above. It will be a major pain, though, to work with the uncompressed files inside AE all the time.
