I’m interested in working in 8-bit, then renderting in 16. Is there a problem with effects that provide a 16bit warning? Will they render in the 16bit space if only designed for 8-bit use? SHould I avoid any 8-bit only effects/filters if I intend to render in 16 bit? Thanks much in advance..

If you get the warning, it means that the effect will render, but you might get a “banding” effect instead of smooth transitions between colours.

One way to think about it is…
If you use a 8bit effect you will limit the color rendition of that state to 8bits. Now if you add an 8bit effect to a video, for example, then add a 16bit glow effect, the glow will generate colors with the full 16 bit space. Keep in mind the reverse of this applying a 16bit glow will yeild 16bit color space but if you add an 8bit effect on top of this you will knock it back down to 8bits.

    hope this helps

Technically you shouldn’t have a problem. Most 8-bit effects are “Render” effects that would not need true 16 bit – a red circle is always a red circle, no matter whicht bit depth. All other 8 bit effects will simply just look the same in 16 bit mode, with all the good and bad sides this may have. I’d be more worried about quality and the look of your comp. Due to the greater fidelity in 16 bpc some effects work a bit differently which results in a different look e.g. of the antialiasing or soft edges on masks that blend together with underlying layers. Effects such as Hue/Saturation or Colorama will also clip colors in 8 bpc but render just fine in 16 bpc. So from my point of view there is little point in working in 8 bit and then rendering in 16 bit simply because you cannot judge the quality properly.
