Huh? What would you do with system clock in an expression? Expressions run in the local context of the layer/ property they are applied to and don’t know anything outside of their own little universe. If there was a function to use realworld times, it would be pretty useless, anyway (as rendering a frame usually takes much longer than a clock cycle you’d always end up with useless random garbage). Your only option is to use “time” and its derived functions/ methods.

Those are usually stream errors in Quicktime files. Have you tried re-importing your clip already? Sometimes the clip is intact and only displays the errors when viewing it in Quicktime player.

January 3, 2006 at 7:40 pm in reply to: Trapcode Plugs

No, not really. Though most plugin suites and other programs have some Rays/ Volumetric Light effect, none of them exactly replicates Shine (not without a lot of extra work, anyway). 3DStroke is very unique and I haven’t seen a similar program. Most other stroke like effects are true 3D renders. This goes quite a bit towards showing how useful and powerful Trapcode plugins are. So you can assume that it is Trapcode most of the time, but not always from inside AE. Digital Fusion, combustion*, Premiere and Final Cut Pro” all offer a way to at least some After Effects plugins, so it could be them in some cases and not AE.

January 2, 2006 at 8:03 am in reply to: Very Difficult track help PLEASE

You can’t track off-screen objects, not even in Shake or Fusion. What those programs do is some kind of smart extrapolation based on the already tracked frames, nothing more. With a smooth movement this indeed can give the illusion of being a perfect track. As for your problem: The most efficient way would be geometry based manual tracking in a 3D program. Create a few planes/ cubes for the shore and the ocean, add a sphere as the sun and then try to move your camera accordingly and create a few keyframes. With some luck, this could be exported as keyframes for AE (e.g. from Cinema4D). Everything elase quite likely won’t work because there isn’t enough parallax in your shot.

Split the layer at the point where it needs to stop, remove the expression from the remaining part and set the opacity to the last value it has on the expression-driven clip.

I think your problem is somehow related to the Sony hardware. Thought they have dropped their insistance on using their “iLink” flavour of firewire, there are still problems with their hardware. I believe they don’t send certain control bits which would make the hardware plug&play compliant. Perhaps that is the problem. On my end I have had little problems. Though I don’t use this feature most of the time, it works for me even on the cheapest of hardware combinations (budget computer with consumer DV device). The only drawback is that it sometimes will only work as NTSC where it should be PAL.

December 29, 2005 at 10:11 pm in reply to: motion blur from corner pin translation

[geezer] “Thanks, I’ll try cc motion blur. Its odd though that AE supports
corner pin tracking but doesn’t consider it in motion blur.”

Nope, that’s not odd, that’s an implementation weakness. ;o) I’m not a programming guy, but as I understand it, plugins are not allowed to request temporal sub-sampling (which would be required for motion blur) and would have to do all such calculations themselves. So if it’s not coded in the plugin, you’re out of luck. CC Motion Blur does some sort of trickery by making AE think that the effect runs at a higher framerate and thus can request more inbetween buffers. Well, perhaps one day we will see the SDK/ API opened up and all effects will automatically get considered for motion blur. It definitely would be nice.

December 29, 2005 at 10:05 pm in reply to: horiz. lense flares tracked

Yeah, that are definitely anamorphic streaks and secondary anamorphic streaks. In theory all light will additively mix, so the Add mode would be appropriate, but Screen looks better in many cases (it will cause less “whitening” and maintain more color). The streaks don’t really interact with the foreground. Lens flares are an in-camera phenomenon and their intensity is only dependent on how much light hits the lens system and at which angle. So whenever they seem to change it’s simply because someone blocks a certain amount of light or the camara moves. This is a bit tricky to recreate manually, but doable, once you get a feel for it. On the other hand you could of course invest a few dollars and buy Knoll Light Factory, which is still the most sophisticated and versatile lens flare plugins. It provides a way to control obscuration by determing how pixels cover its (imaginary) light source.

I have no idea what you are talking about. The only thing that comes to mind are anamorphic streaks (which are part of lens flare phenomenons) and those can be easily created using simple line shaped solids with soft edges and glow applied.
