Ok. I have AE and love it. I have the trapcode plugs. You see tons of shine, 3d stroke, etc all over the place.

The question is: Do other programs give these same effects, or is it done in AE? I guess could someone buy another program and without plugs get the volumetric light from shine or the 3d stroke effect. Hope Im making sense.

No, not really. Though most plugin suites and other programs have some Rays/ Volumetric Light effect, none of them exactly replicates Shine (not without a lot of extra work, anyway). 3DStroke is very unique and I haven’t seen a similar program. Most other stroke like effects are true 3D renders. This goes quite a bit towards showing how useful and powerful Trapcode plugins are. So you can assume that it is Trapcode most of the time, but not always from inside AE. Digital Fusion, combustion*, Premiere and Final Cut Pro” all offer a way to at least some After Effects plugins, so it could be them in some cases and not AE.

I agree with Mylene, and I really wouldn’t be too worried about it.

It has been said by many before, plugins should never be looked at as the main focus of your composition, just a way to improve it; Use them as you would use your sound track, then again, again I’ve seen sound tracks with white screens…

I see many many people just use 3d stroke (For eg.), without any planning, and then just build around it hoping that better things with come with it. And all we usually end up seing is… a good commercial spot for trapcode.

I know this is starting to look like an oversused argument too, so I’ll stop here 😉

Yeah, Any 3D app will do volumatric lighting like shine/lux. I’ve made my own 3D stroke in Maya by assigning particle sprites (of white circles) along a path.
