You don’t see any rippling underwater. Contiguous volumes of the same substance with constant density do not create any distortion/ refraction whatsoever inside this volume according to the laws of physics. All you would see is some absorbtion (desaturation), light scattering due to micro particles (blur) and a definitive color shift toewards blue (because lower frequencies of the light spectrum get absorbed) in an underwater scene. It is much more important to keep those effects in mind. Use pale makeup and very diffuse lighting. Also add realism by using a fan to create motion in hair and clothes of your talent. Lastly add particle systems for air bubbles and plankton particles.

  • No. Premiere does not support all blend modes and adjustment layers are unique to AE.

Output to SWF uses the old Flash format up to v6. It embeds your pictures as an PNG or JPEG sequence, hence the file is bigger. If you want to keep small filesizes, export to FLV and embed that into a Flash file.

[Jonathan Alexander] “I see what you are saying, but there are times when it still might be useful, no?”

Personally I don’t think so. you see, why implement a feature that only gets used by maybe 20% of users once a week. I certainly wouldn’t use it – it seems illogical to me to enforce things such as “Superblack” and “Superwhite” on footage that is going to end up on a DVD anyway. Even many computer CoDecs such as DivX do not keep this high color dynamic range in favor of better compression. But if you think it would be useful, go ahead and file a FR at the Adobe site.

[Jonathan Alexander] “Is there a way to maybe do this in a workaround way?”

No, not with the curves effect. Since it is basically just one large custom effects control, you have no access to its internal workings using expressions. You can get something like that using the Levels effect, but it still requires a third-party color sampler plugin such as the one contained in Digital Anarchy’s Anarchy Toolbox set.

Other than that look into Photoshop automation. If you want to stylize your stuff, you can use Batch actions very effectively in the manner you need.

  • No. Your memory is betraying you. There is no such function in AE. Most likely it was a script. The closest you can get with vanilla AE is using techniques as Andrew Kramer illustrates them in his slideshow tutorial.

No. Technically it wouldn’t even be correct and thus pretty useless many times. Since AE is aimed at creating video content, you usually don’t want your colors to be “pure” because when movin on to editing, your setup levels and white points will be adjusted anyways.

I’m actually going through the process myself, right now.

Maqxon has their own pay-for training site, full of TONS of training videos, and it’s quite excellent:

Yeah, but I think it’s overkill. If one really subscribes and intends to watch all their videos, you spend more time with them instead of working in C4D. ;o) They should also put up more free examples. I really can’t make up my mind about it from what little is there.

Never ever produce GIFs directly from AE!!! They will look shabby no matter how you tweak your settings. Render your banner out as a *.mov and import that file into Image Ready. Adjust and optimize your file there, including color palette and reduction of redundant frames.
