ok… this is pretty basic stuff, but i am not sure if i am messing up or if it is normal… and i searched the posts but found nothing to help… so here it is…

i have 10bit video i compressed to mpeg4 format. it is a 30 second clip and once compressed to mpeg4 it is 2.9mb. I brought it into AE and exported to swf with medium quality for video and audio. It gives me the .swf and the .htm files. The .swf is 9.5mb and the .htm is 4kb. Does this sound normal to you frequent swf makers? I thought the purpose of the .swf was for it to decrease in size. Am I doing something wrong or is there an easier way?

I want the most compatible format. Mpeg4 is smaller so why would i use the .swf? Would it be for compatibility reasons?

Any help or advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!!

    Cheers!

Output to SWF uses the old Flash format up to v6. It embeds your pictures as an PNG or JPEG sequence, hence the file is bigger. If you want to keep small filesizes, export to FLV and embed that into a Flash file.

Thank you very much… I will try that now. Should I export the mpeg4 to FLV then to SWF, or uncompressed QT to FLV and so on?

    Cheers!

Also, does AE export to FLV or do I need a different program?

    Cheers!

You should always encode uncompressed files for the best results. Compressing already compressed video might result in bigger files and unnessesary artifacts and stutters.

I use the video bundle(including flash 8) here so I can export directly to flv from within ae. It’s at File>Export>Macromedia Flash Video. Should be the same in the standalone version.

Just noticed that my flash player won’t play flv’s since theres no script to turn the playback on. Therefore you need to embed them into a swf flash file or play them with a player like VLC or Sorenson FLV Player.

Thank you for the help! I am working with AE 6.5 and there is no option to export to FLV… only to SWF. I must need to upgrade.

    Cheers!
