Your best bet is to try the Paint brush, although you won’t have bezier curves. With the “constant” setting, keyframe the shape node and paint away. The software will interpolate the shape between keyframes. With some practice, this is a very good way to draw in AE.
My favorite technique is to clone from one layer to another, or from the same layer, different frame. This is useful to remove rigs and wires from shots, also to remove acne and wrinkles from a model’s face. The key here is to find the best offset that will serve your purpose throughout most of the clip, and finding the best transfer mode for the desired effect. Lighten often removes wires and acne, while Darken is good for filling in a bald spot of hair, or covering up some skin.
Also, don’t forget, you can paint on all channels, or any combination. If you see a problem that only lies on the Blue channel, why not just paint that channel? Also, be aware that you may not want to paint on the alpha, and you can turn that option off if you like.

There are a thousand uses for this. Experiment and learn.

  • yes, it’s the position from the camera.

The obvious solution- why not rent a 24p camera for the shoot?

If you shoot interlaced, I find it’s often best to keep the fields. No reason to deinterlace and throw away half your vertical resolution.
If you do convert to 24p, you will then need to introduce 3:2 pulldown when you go out to tape or dvd (assuming this is for distribution/broadcast in the U.S.). If not for U.S. Distribution, why not leave it PAL? Video will not really look like film just by changing the frame rate. For the film look, try adjusting levels, and light your shots well. (use a blue-gel light to bring out details in the shadows, otherwise you will lose detail when you adjust the levels in AE. Hope this helps.

hey, I had to do this recently on a job. I created all my elements (buttons, icons, cursors, windows, scrollbars, etc.) in Illustrator and imported into AE. This was important for our purposes (to maintain full scalability of the GUI). Alot of the elements can be re-used and changed quickly by referencing the AI file. Just remember to create stuff on different layers in AI, so they can be imported as a comp into AE. Also, It’s good to set crop marks in illustrator, so the elements import consistently the same size. Hope this helps.

  • I think that if there was a plugin built to do that, you would see that type of effect more often. It’s hard to tell from the stills, but I bet they used animation in 3d software combined with animation in AE to achieve that style.

Favorite is fractal noise. So much can be done with that one alone.

You can change the text in Photoshop, and the layer style will update. Just don’t rasterize the text layers. If there is some step in your process that involves rasterizing your layers, and there is no way around it, you can record your steps as an action, and apply it to any changed text with the push of a button.

If you are importing to AE for animation, you may want to create a version with flattened layer styles, sometimes they don’t translate into AE very well.

  • in the interpret footage dialog box, click on ” more options,” then select “more accurate” (as opposed to faster).

just duplicate the layer, add a gaussian blur to the top layer, then overlay or transfer mode the layer. Adjust transparency to taste.
