Does anyone know where I might find a soft filter type plugin for AE? I’m looking for the effect that makes your shots look like they were filmed with a soft lense filter. Specifically, I’m looking for that ESPN type soft glow in some of their in-studio interviews.

Free would be great, but that may be too much to hope for. If this can be done in AE without a plugin, I’d be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction!
    Thanks,
    Sean

you could try magic bullet…i know thats not really professional but it gets the job done in most cases…

just duplicate the layer, add a gaussian blur to the top layer, then overlay or transfer mode the layer. Adjust transparency to taste.

yep, the duplicating and blending mode method works well and you don’t suffer from extremely long render times like when using magic bullet

If I may be a touch more specific:

AS said, duplicate your layer. On the top layer add a gaussian blur. Let’s say to something like 4 to 6. Then simply drop the opacity to something like 40%. This will give you a standard “Pro mist” look. This won’t effect your overall levels at all.

However if you want to get funky with the levels, try changing the transfer mode of the top (blurred layer):

Screen: Brighter look, but a bit “Sexier” as Chris and Trish Meyer would say.

Add: With this, I’d also add a tint to the top layer like a golden hue. Then you get a fiery burnt out look.

Overlay: This can increase your overall contrast. Get the right balance of blur and opacity and it gives you a bit of a music video look.
