April 30, 2005 at 10:16 pm in reply to: how do I online my media at full resoultion/quality when I’m ready in FCP 4.5 +Using FCP almost all situations are online quality. Using DV, it is always online quality as there is only one quality of the compressed format.
Now you can set FCP to allow you to view different levels of quality for edit purposes, but FCP is always going to output at the highest quality.

Are you absolutely sure about that? There was a one time FCP 3 Academic to FCP 4 upgrade for the price of the Retail upgrade, but it was my understanding because of the issues upgrading from an OS 9 version of FCP to OSX and the latest MAC’;s inability to boot into OS 9, that sorta forced Apple into letting somethings slip a little.
It was my inpression from that point on, that any Academic software would not be capable of being upgraded again and especially to a retail version!

[Prashant Bhargava] ” Is there a cheap utility out there that can recover data? I know nothing has been erased.
“
Regrettably, there is no way to reassemble that data as it was parsed out between two volumes. If you reinstall 10.2 and don’t touch your hardware , those mounted volumes should come alive.
I was able to do that to get the most valuable data off but actually when I removed the SIIG card and installed the FirmTek SATA card and made those two drive a RAID 0, the entire volume of data came up!
-
I had virtually the same happen to me. My Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 GHz MAC had a SIIG ATA-133 ATA card hostin two 250 GB drives. Upon loading Panther, pffffst! No more drives!
I eventually got tired of trying to get SIIG to own up and I started my quest with Serial ATA drives.
Here’s hoping Tiger doesn’t kill those FirmTek SATA adapters.

[Joe Murray] “FCP’s multicam and more than 2 channel audio are very cool, but they’re more of a “well it’s about time” upgrade rather than a “wow I didn’t expect that!””
No! _ We were expecting it in FCP 4! But FINALLY – Final Cut Pro is getting to parity with the Avid crowd and in some cases surpasses the Avid interface for usability.
For Apple Video users, NAB 2005 was BIGGGGGGG! Soundtrack Pro was unexpected and moves up several notches as an audio editing tool within the FCP suite of tools. 24 tracks of audio in Quicktime?? WooHoo! Finally- 5.1 and 7.1 surround!!!
If you saw the demos of HDV on Final Cut Pro 5, it cured me of the sour “it’s only MPEG” comments. Apple has done wonders with the format forced upon the industry by Sony.
And – I WAS surprised how Apple build in MultiCam. Nice key cutting features.
Really nice job – Apple

[Walter Biscardi] “they will all be watching this show from an HD feed and I’m betting that a LOT of them will still own projection or tube television”
Isn’t the issue really how it looks on an LCD or DLP projection unit. Either a standalone projector or one of the new $2500 desk top projection televisions?
Those others you seem to be defending that only have CRT’s are 4:3 or some pseudo frame cram projection, but just go to Best Buy or Buy.com amd look at what is for sale. Agreed there are CRT based 30″ and 34″ televisions but the whole of projection televisions or LCD 25″ to 35″ televisions are not CRT and the CRT is DEAD for all practical purposes as a medium for HD viewing.
There needs to be a different “standard” for color correction with LCD and projection.
The Apple 23″ CRT display with either the AJA or Decklink HD converters are the most practical way of displaying every pixel of 1080.

Every so often – it is a good idea to remove everything from your system drive and reload EVERYTHING. I find it perfect upon encountering a major OS upgrade like 10.3 to 10.4.
UNIX can get very cluttered when loading all those apps and here’s what I do.
Mount a Firewire drive and use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the entire boot drive to it.
This accomlishes two things.First – Never update an operating system without a backup!
This action gives you a bootable Firewire drive with all original contents.
No matter what happens from this point, you can always go back!Next, use the disk utilities to initialize the primary boot disk and if you are able write all zero’s to the platters to insure all the data is oblitherated.
Load up the Tiger installation DVD and follow the install instructions.
After the system has restarted under 10.4; you can now copy your applications folder from the Firewire drive and your user folders. any mail and browser bookmarks.
Hopefully all your mounted drives came to life under the new operating system and with a little care you should know what does and what doesn’t now work on Tiger.
Don’t forget to run Disk Utilities>Repair Permissions after the initial upgrade install and after using CCC to relaod your files.

[Marc Rolph] “Why go HDV when you can go full HD?”
When you do finally see HDV edited on FCP 5 you will understand why your thoughts may be overly critical of HDV image quality. Apple and Sony were together ALL over NAB and using the Sony HDV semi pro camera, the actual picture was beautiful. My own angst against MPEG-2 starting material was changed with this experience. FCP 5’s ability to edit accurate MPEG-2 long GOP was nothing short of fabulous!
While you will always find better lenses and consequently better looking uncompressed HD with a much more costly setup, the HDV concept looks almost as good for way less money.
