As I begin my first major upgrade to my G5 2ghz Power Mac. Is there anything that I should be careful about as I prepare to jump right into Tiger and then upgrade right into FCP Studio upgrades (not to mention other apps like Autodesk Combustion4? Up til now I primarily edit DV and 24p (23.98) using my Dvx100A via Firewire? After the move to Tiger, then I will begin to make choices concerning HD, low-cost RAID and Capture Cards.

I guess I’m just looking for a Road Map of sorts – advice from those who have done this before. Ultimately, I know that we are taking the plunge together and that there will be uncertainties regardless.

I don’t know. Are you just going to buy the upgrade and do it? Nothing to it?

The new apps do not require Tiger. They will run just fine on Panther, so if you’re nervous about upgrading the OS, just wait until the dust settles.

I’m already on order for the OS. I guess it’s going to take a fews short weeks for feedback to roll in anyway. Of which, I will probably be able to read about hear and other places. Just a little nervous though. My 2Ghz G5 has been running great with no problems up to this point.

Do you take care of your computer/regularily maintain your system? If yes – I don’t see any problem or issue with Tiger.

Every so often – it is a good idea to remove everything from your system drive and reload EVERYTHING. I find it perfect upon encountering a major OS upgrade like 10.3 to 10.4.

UNIX can get very cluttered when loading all those apps and here’s what I do.

Mount a Firewire drive and use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the entire boot drive to it.
    This accomlishes two things.

First – Never update an operating system without a backup!
This action gives you a bootable Firewire drive with all original contents.
No matter what happens from this point, you can always go back!

Next, use the disk utilities to initialize the primary boot disk and if you are able write all zero’s to the platters to insure all the data is oblitherated.

Load up the Tiger installation DVD and follow the install instructions.

After the system has restarted under 10.4; you can now copy your applications folder from the Firewire drive and your user folders. any mail and browser bookmarks.

Hopefully all your mounted drives came to life under the new operating system and with a little care you should know what does and what doesn’t now work on Tiger.

Don’t forget to run Disk Utilities>Repair Permissions after the initial upgrade install and after using CCC to relaod your files.

Thanks for the outline. I don’t have an additional drive. I may have to wing it. I’ve managed to maintain my system with no problems so far.

Disk Warrior is on my list of things to get though.

Sooner or later your system drive will fail or get messed up or your mac will need a trip to the shop. Why not spring for an external drive on which you can clone your system. If you get a loaner, you can boot from this drive and not miss a beat. If your system drive fails or gets corrupted you can boot from the external copy and clone it back. It’s not a matter of if but when.

Can you recommend a simple little extrenal drive that could be used for backup of MAC HD? I’m in the process of evaluating some of the low-cost RAID solutions (eg. Huge, G-Tech, etc) for my ultimate storage solution.
