Use replace footage for the 2 other instances, and point to the original clip.

If you are running Mavericks beware that many previous Quicktime codecs are not installed anymore, for example Uncompressed. You will need to install Quicktime 7 to get these.

There are definitaly problems with SMB2. Windows clients have problems connecting, and sometimes Mavericks clients as well. Solution is to restart the SMB file sharing service once in a while. We usually force connect the Mavericks clients through AFP:// and it seems to help.

  • What are your render settings? Do you reuse preview render files? If so, is the sequence set to same codec settings as output?

We stick to Mac for the Adobe products on account of more user friendliness ( we use PC’s for 3D because of software limitations on Mac), but also Prores, ans its possibility to render into non-SMTE formats ( not possible with DnxHD)

Media encoder will benefit from the 8-core CPU’s. You might consider using one for transcoding. Also After Effects renders tend to lock up machines, and is once to be able to set aside on a separate machine.

January 27, 2014 at 10:48 pm in reply to: Mavericks Server AFP vs SMB2

Hi Bob – actually we only have speed issues with Mavericks clients that connect directly to the MacMini Server by SMB2, through ordinary ethernet switch connection. The clients that are directly connected to the SmallTree card are still on Mountain Lion, and therefore use AFP as default connection.

The issues we experience are Finder Windows not showing folder content, and sometimes large file transfers failing if we explore the Server in another Finder window at the same time. I will try to make some tests where we force connect the Mavericks computers by AFP, and see if it makes a difference.
