    Did you try the auto trace feature under the layer menu? Not sure what you are trying to accomplish, but for the tracking point, the auto trace feature will make a new layer with masks. Just make sure you use the luminace property. You can then make that new layer an adjustment layer.

    You can do this with sub-pixel positioning. Put a colored layer (black) behind your footage, make both 3D and give the colored layer a position of 0,1. Parent that to your footage.

    Do you have the latest version of AE? I think there was a fix regarding importing files from Maya in the free upgrade to 7.01.

    Total Training has some excellent DVD’s from basic to advanced. Check out the Anvel at http://www.anvel.com. Owner of the website is the same guy with the advanced AE stuff from total training.

    Creating Motion Graphics with Chris and Trish Meyer. There are several volumes of this book so make sure you get the correct one. They also have a column at DV.com where you can find some articles made by the mentioned authors. I don’t think the first volumes cover any HD stuff.
    I am sure that if you google the terms you ask for, you will find in-depth articles anf tutorials as well.

    I did a search on national geographic just because I suspected that you would need a hi-speed camera to see the motion of a frog’s tounge.
    Here’s a qoute from the article…..

    “Working with researchers doing video studies of frog tongue protraction, he used still cameras with lasers and a high-speed strobe light set at 1/50,000 of a second.

    You need to take a look at the real (frog) world…. and prepare for a lot of motion blur….
