  • Importing 3D Maya files into AE?

I can’t figure out how to import my 3D Maya files into AE for 3D motion tracking. I have all the the camera movements down, but I have to import my 3D models to use with it; you can only do so much with text. I’ve looked everywhere to find the answer, and I’m sure there’s a way, but I can’t figure it out! Thanks for any help in advance.

on how to import Maya data. However you said you want to “import your 3d Maya Files into AE for 3d motion tracking.” Keep in mind that AE does not have a 3d motion tracker, it only has a 2d motion tracker. Also, when you said you want to import your 3d models, this can’t be done without something like invigorator, and with Zaxwerks Invigorator all you can do is bring in a .obj file (so no maya textures). All you can do is bring Maya camera data and the positions of nulls (I think Maya calls them locators) into After Effects.

Geometry cannot be imported in AE (Why else would you then need Maya?). Render your scenes there and import the footage. AE willl only import cameras and Nulls. And like Colin said: Motion Tracking in AE is a merely 2D process. If you need real matchmoving, you need to buy additional software or update to Maya unlimited (with Maya Live).

Do you have the latest version of AE? I think there was a fix regarding importing files from Maya in the free upgrade to 7.01.
