  • Help with an adjustment layer/tracking?

Posted by Fitbikeco88 on February 2, 2007 at 6:23 pm

I’ve been trying to do this effect where i have a box, made with 3d stroke, that hovers around the screen. I’m just wondering if there is any way I can track the 3d stroke box that I created so I can then apply the tracking to an adjustment layer to sort of create a magnification effect, by changing the transform property of the adjustment layer, for whatever passes under the box. I tried it, and it’s like it doesn’t even see the box and tries to track the footage behind it. I tried pre-comping everything and then tracking from there but that doesnt work either. Any advice or if there is anyone who thinks they may know, but don’t understand my problem, please let me know.

    Thanks

    Pre-render and do the track.

Did you try the auto trace feature under the layer menu? Not sure what you are trying to accomplish, but for the tracking point, the auto trace feature will make a new layer with masks. Just make sure you use the luminace property. You can then make that new layer an adjustment layer.

Did you set keyframes for the postion of the box? Use them for the adjustment layer or, parent the adjustment layer to the box layer.

I tried pre-rendering, and it still did not track the box I created with stroke and I also tried the auto trace feature and that also did not pick up the box. I even experimented with the auto trace feature a little and still nothing. Here’s a frame from my comp. What I’m trying to do is make it so whatever the box passes over is magnified. I know how to do the magnification part, I just dont know how to get my adjustment layer to be able to follow this box around the screen.

Well the thing is, since I am using stroke to make the box, I edited the position values inside of stroke. Therefore, if I try to copy the position values, it also copies the stroke effect, which doesn’t output the desired effect I’m looking for. I’m really stumped. I know this has to be easy and I might be making it harder than it really is. If anyone has any alternate suggestions of how I may be able to achieve this effect I would love to hear them.

    Thanks again

or duplicate the box layer remove the stroke effect and set to adjustment layer.

    pre-comp the stroked box layer
    open the pre-comp
create an adjustment layer under the box layer
    copy the box mask
    paste it on adjustment layer
apply transform effect to adj layer
    adjust scale to suit taste
    go back to main comp
enable collapse transformations on box precomp

I’m confused as to why you used 3D stroke to make that box. It looks very 2D to me. Anyways, I have no idea why the tracker wouldn’t work. Does it work on other footage?
