[Walter Graff] “Let’s not spread any rumors without fact. Have you seen XDCAM in action. To speak authentically would mean yo have used it and know it artifacts, etc. If not then all you are doing is creating rumor. “

I’d have to disagree Walter. If it’s using MPEG2 like HDV then that is all that many of us need to know…

Very well said as usual Ron. If nothing else it made for interesting drama…

February 19, 2006 at 1:45 am in reply to: What can we expect from NAB?

[Ron Lindeboom] “I am expecting a lot of mediocre food, sore feet from being on concrete for days on end, as well as ears to ring from the sensory bombardment of having our booth near Apple and Avid, who — though they have been separated this year by an aisle — will in all likelihood still be performing their yearly rendition of the Hatfields vs the McCoys. ;o)”

Not to start a flame war, but this started as a one sided fight. Two years ago Avid made it impossible to hear the Apple presentation when I was standing deep IN the Apple booth area. Desperation makes people do stupid things. The NAB organizers got a great many complaints… even from other booth owners near Avid.

Last year it wasn’t as much of a problem because the Avid booth was much less populated… people actually stood in the Avid booth and looked across the aisle to watch the Apple presentations.

Lets’ hope this year the aisle separation and the complaints from attendees and the NAB organization will have Avid a bit more calm…

[Tim Martin] “In Final Cut Pro with Nattress Plugins.”

I’d be interested in hearing more details on how you did this. The noise seems to be the only drawback to the camera so far…

November 15, 2005 at 3:39 pm in reply to: Boris 3D text not broadcast legal???

[Walter Biscardi] “Levels and colors seems to be a growing issue in our field.”

Amen to that Walter… with the low price of entry, there seems to be an onslaught of editors that missed the “basics” section on the knowledge path. I see it every week in my FCP classes. I don’t expect it to improve in the short run…

Your earlier point was well made in my opinion. If you’re going to call yourself an editor, then you need to know this stuff… otherwise why not just have the receptionist cut the thing…

October 20, 2005 at 4:34 pm in reply to: Why do I need Blackburst or Reference/Sync?

[Lee Berger] “You don’t need Blackburst or Reference to use Io in a stand-alone edit system, capturing and editing from analog or SDI sources, and then back out to tape. You only need an external reference if you plan to integrate Io into a switching and mixing system where you need to take the Io’s output synchronously. “

I’m not sure I agree with that assessment anymore. I too used my Io without one (with SDI), but after a series of firmware updates started experiencing audio clicks and spikes randomly. Ended up replacing the Io, but still had them. Added a sync generator to the Io, the deck and the monitor and the problem disappeared…

October 20, 2005 at 4:31 pm in reply to: AJA IO dsr-11 firewire trouble

[Lee Berger] “I use an 8′ cable between the Mac and switch, and 3′ cable between the switch, Io, and my DSR1500. “

If you have a 1500 why would you bother with a DSR-11? Add the SDI option to your 1500 and your world will forever change, as your DVcam footage will improve imeasurably…

September 19, 2005 at 3:29 pm in reply to: HD monitor price insanity – RANT !

[Bob Zelin] “I could be wrong here, but I am now told that MODERN current Plasma screens like the
new Panasonic plasma DO NOT burn, and that this is an urban legend that applied to early plasmas. Again, I don’t know this for a fact and I could be wrong about it (I read an article in a pro video magazine about this – who knows how accurate the author was). “

I’ve actually seen it on a plasma, but to be fair, I’ve seen it on a rear projection set as well. I’ve also seen plasma screens die after only 14 months. One assumes that all of this improves in time. For me, the slow refresh kept us from using one for personal HD viewing. Now I know why the stores like to show animated films on the plasmas on display… like everything, it improves with each revision.
