FWIW, I don’t have any issues with anybody that likes FCPX or wants to be a fan boy etc. That’s perfectly fine, and I see a lot of good in FCPX.
What I have a problem with is people telling those of us (with considerable experience) that our concerns are unwarranted (and no I’m not referring to you in any way).
It hasn’t gone unnoticed that a lot of those people criticizing us don’t have anywhere near the same level of experience. Just because someone doesn’t see the problem doesn’t mean there isn’t one.
Is FCPX going to fail? Of course not. Will it be great? Probably… the question is how long will we have to wait for that, and how many of you here will have the luxury of waiting? Everyone needs to answer that question themselves… no one else can tell you what to do.

You’re reading far too much into this. What Apple has committed to is that FCP runs under the Lion release in July. Nothing more…

Let me set my glass of KoolAid down long enough to respond. For those of you that don’t speak “Apple” fluently, you have to read their words very carefully. Multicam won’t be coming in an upgrade… It won’t be here until the next “major” release. When the hell is that? Is it a year… Less… More? And just so you know, “major” releases are “paid” releases according to the program they outlined on the Mac Store before FCPX was released…

This has been on my mind. Why rush out FCPX so quick? Is it perhaps because Lion is coming in a month, and FCP7 wont run on it very well, so you punch FCPX out quick and discontinue FCP7 before people can scream about FCP7 problems under Lion? Could be just coincidental, but the timing my not be…

Well, thanks AJA for posting the first (and only so far) good news about FCPX. It continues to reinforce my “All AJA” shop approach.
My only question is, I guess we would need a dual boot if we want to use both versions of FCP… so we could have both drivers installed on different startups?

My thoughts exactly. This would rock if my 5DmkII could use it. This could also stop a lot of people rushing from FCP to Premiere just to save the Pro-Res conversion time.

As usual, Noah gives good advice. I’m editing some stuff shot in the mid-west by somebody else that has a lot of this. Most of it is unusable because when shooting outdoors they let the camera compensate by raising the shutter speed to compensate for the brightness level. Bad choice, and it’s one of the downsides to this death grip we have on short DOF with an emphasis on wide open apertures.
To show you how bad it can be, not only is it all staccato, but in many frames there is a pronounced double image… which really draws attention.
To be fair to DSLRs, one of the locations was shot on an EX-3, and there is a simple walk in by the talent under a tree outside, and it has the same problem, only to a much lesser degree. I had to play the original clip of the clients HD to confirm that it was in the original.
Rolling shutter is a fun thing, huh? Recently I’m experiencing a little phenomenon that appears to be related to using Kino’s. Doesn’t happen with incandescents or LED’s. Just what we need… more fun.

Bill (as usual) makes a series of good suggestions. What you’re going through is typical and there is no one right answer. For my part, I’ll add the following:
1) I went the cage route, and then abandoned it. Too slow to remove things quickly and the problem with threaded holes is that things loosen easily when bumped, or through the simple weight of the arm, etc.
2) Went back to a Zacuto rig. Everything that mounts uses mini-clamps and can be adjusted or removed in a heartbeat. Way better solution.
3) Like Bill, I like the monitor on the tripod in many cases, for the reasons Bill mentions, and I like it closer for critical focusing. Depending on the situation, I may even use a 17″ monitor.
4) I don’t use HDMI. I built a powered converter that converts to HD-SDI, as it can support reasonable cable lengths. It also allows two HD_SDI outputs… one for producers, etc. I’m past the days of enjoying them looking over my shoulder or being in my lap looking at “MY” monitor.
5) I do use a Z-finder. They are invaluable when going portable. I would never try to focus off the LCD without one. I don’t have a single shot out of focus in several days of shooting. Having recently edited some footage shot by others I wish they had been using one.
There will be no convenient place for you to have all this explained. It’s part of the cost of admission. Besides, what I like may be unsuitable for you. That’s why we have choices… Guinness & Coors, blonds, brunettes, redheads, etc…
