I don’t disagree with your logic… it just seems like we have an even bigger void in management these days though. Perhaps it’s because they are straddling two worlds… Steve’s and whoever is next in line…

You might be on to something. Right or wrong, like many people, in spite of my best efforts, this debacle has soured me on Apple in general. Not a good thing since I’ve been buying their products since the 70’s (in significant quantities). I decided not to upgrade the laptops as planned. The new Mac Pro (if it had Thunderbolt) was a definite purchase. Not now. I’m also find I’m becoming completely ambivalent on new iPhones and iPads.
I recommend Apple products weekly… Right now that is on hold. I’m not trying to blow this out of proportion, but this screw up makes the MobileMe roll out look like a success by comparison. I’m certain this will end up being a business school case study on how precisely NOT to handle things…
Apples future with less Steve Jobs “hands on day to day” may not be as bright as we had hoped…

You make an interesting point, but I can’t help feeling that this is analogous to saying you should have multiple wives in case one disappoints you. One could argue that if you could trust the first one not to shaft you (as Apple has), then one would have been enough.
Just a thought…

This is the key point so many are missing. Desktop Display isn’t the same thing as having the real output passed through by the program, any more than a picture of a Ferrari is the same as the real thing. This is a crucial fix that Apple needs to correct. Then and only then can AJA,Decklink, Matrox etc. Create a driver that will do what is needed…

That price comparison is meaningless. FCS is an entire suite of programs… FCPX is not. That’s like saying the price of the new engine and transmission is still less than the price of the entire old car? What’s the point…

I totally understand your point Ben, and I hope I was clear enough that my post had absolutely no reference to you. I agreed with your point, and just thought that it would be nice if this could always be a two way street (or is that bi-directional).
I have a wait-and-see attitude like you. Unfortunately, I do need two things added before we can really use it. After that I’ll wait for the rest. Doesn’t mean that I don’t like what they’ve done.
FWIW, I will say that I never would have named this FCP anything. I would have called it iCut 1.0… “the future of editing”, so everyone knew it was a radical departure and not in anyway an FCP upgrade. I also would not have discontinued FCS3, but then I have a business degree and all of this seems so obvious.
That’s what Apple did when they brought out OSX, and we all understood.
Keep posting Ben, people are getting benefit from your efforts…

To be really clear, on MacNN, they have it worded this way:
Multicam editing is coming to a future Final Cut Pro update, something which Apple says it couldn’t roll into a minor patch but had to come soon.
“Multicam editing is an important and popular feature, and we will provide great multicam support in the next major release,” Apple says.
In the nearer term….
I realize that my crystal ball is no better than yours Gary, but I interpret that to mean that we will be waiting for some time for this next “major release”, i.e. not in the “nearer term”. Will that be 6 months… a year… who knows.
If somebody died and left me in charge (perish the thought), I’d ram out Multicam way quicker, along with a proper output to third party cards (not the damned desktop display). These two things alone would allow a lot of us to jump in sooner, while waiting for the other stuff we need…
Just my $0.02… put your flame helmet on Gary, I think it’s about to get a lot warmer in here… 🙂
