[Simon Ubsdell] ” I seriously doubt that we’re going to sell enough units to cover the time we have spent developing it, but that was never really the point. “

I think that’s a function of how well the word gets out. I watched the video… dropped what I was doing and bought it. I think they’ll be fairly common… but then all your stuff is pretty much must have…

[Oliver Peters] “Until someone comes up with better products that ALSO achieve critical mass, that won’t change.”

Agreed. I’ve been exploring Affinity products. Affinity Photo is a true 64 bit screamer and it’s faster than other image editing programs I own.

I intend to look at Affinity Designer… an Illustrator replacement when I get some time.

Without CC, I don’t think companies like Affinity could find a market…

[Simon Ubsdell] “FCP 7’s brute force relinking was what made it one of the most powerful NLEs ever – if that’s what you needed.

Agreed, I miss that feature. I used it often…

February 18, 2016 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Force relink

[Bret Williams] “Sometimes, even if it’s the same file! Today I opened an old FCP 7 project. It opened fine. So I exported xml, used 7toX to make it FCPXML and everything relinked except one AIFF music file. Same media that was in the legacy timeline. So I had to bring it in and redo all the cuts and audio keyframes. The clip I brought in that wouldn’t relink matched the other clips specs exactly. As it should as it’s the same file! Same kHz, same name, same length, same file. But NO, X says it’s a different length.”

Had the same experience… I feel your pain…

[Oliver Peters] “1. You need a video-only transition without expanding. Seems like a simple modifier to the existing effect command would accomplish this.”

Based on the length of this thread and the overall agreement, I think Apple should…

[Bill Davis] “I think it’s Mitch Ives who’s signature notes something along the lines that Friction – and it’s accompanying squeaks – draw attention to things we often take for granted.”

[Mathieu Ghekiere] “Depends on what you take as update. The last big feature release was april last year. The last minor update, and update in general, was last september.”

It’s amazing what passes for a “big feature release” these days… 🙂

[joe mordecai] “Motion + Compressor as well. For the most part, stability/bug fix updates. I think we were all secretly hoping for something bigger after six months, but oh well – life goes on!”

6 months? Wasn’t it las April?

[Lillian Young] “Every non-editor I meet uses FCPX. I’ve defended FCPX and use it for quick, private projects. But it’s iMovie + Motion, basically. “

So, 20+ years as an editor and I’m now a non-editor? If you say so…

December 29, 2015 at 2:44 am in reply to: The language of letting go

[John Davidson] “The Pros were so upset when FCPX didn’t support tape.”

Had similar thoughts when I had to edit something shot entirely on tape. Yes, there are work-a-rounds with 3rd party equipment, but they aren’t very elegant. Yes, I know that tape is no longer the current medium, but there are millions of hours of footage on tape that will be around for the rest of our lifetimes.

Not a deal killer, just another compromise. There’s “new”… there’s “improved”… and they don’t always mean the same thing…
