I’d hold off on that Sonnett. Some testing results are coming up less than positive with certain drives. The Rocket Raid has proven to be pretty good (after some early problems), and the safest of all are the SeriTek cards. Personally, I’d get two of the external 4 ports and max out the performance by splitting the load.
My .02… (from a guy who’s been doing SATA raids from the day the first G5 dual was released)

How about the fact that the Kona 2 lacks YUV and S-video in… something he needs to do the BetaSP he listed? This remains the single biggest mystery to me… why did they leave this off on the Kona 2 when the Io and the decklinks all have this?

That’s my understanding as well Tom. People really need to accept that HDV isn’t like all the other formats. The introduction of MPEG-2 compression changes everything and makes it neither fish nor fowl. I see people railing about it’s compromises… hey the whole format is one big compromise, which is why many people remain unconvinced.
I spent three months with the first iteration, and in spite of the Sony and second JVC entries, HDV as a format hasn’t changed. One, they always hook the cameras directly to monitors. Damn it looks great. Now record and then playback from tape… damn it looks different. Then there’s the editing… dropouts are a whole new thing… not just sparkles. Rapid movement introduces artifacting in speeds other than 24p. On the fly compression has its challenges, as do realtime monitoring.
Will all this improve in time. Maybe? One certainly hopes so. The question is will it be moot at that point? Will something better like the real HD of the Panasonic come along and make the HDV (high definition DV) format a footnote in history? Maybe.
As the Chinese say… may you live in interesting times… I think we’re there!

Adrenaline job? The guy with the adrenaline nearest me thought those existed until his clients found me and the FCP systems. FWIW, he has an FCP system in the building now (then again every Avid post house here does at this point).
I’m surprised that no one has mentioned the compositing and layering of FCP. Avid has no answer for what I do in FCP each single week.
Your comment on “film being forever” definitely helped me put your views in perspective…

The Io is a solid piece of equipment. The other comment about drivers being held up is true enough. Case in point, the Io won’t work with Tiger… not until the new drivers come out which will apparently be after FCP 5 is released some several weeks later.
I have not had any experience trying to use a FW800 raid with the Io. Personally, I’d avoid it. I prefer the SATA raids which are faster and don’t use the FW bus.

When we first started with FCP we realized how hard it was going back and forth between our Matrox systems and FCP. In the end, I “burned the ships” and went all FCP so we could concentrate on developing the same proficiency with it. It was a bold move and resulted in some unbillable hours in the beginning, but in the end it was the right move.
FWIW, I agree with your sentiments on the Avid. I have never understood the attraction to it…

All good points Tony. The problem is we can’t operate in a vacuum these days. We have a lot of testing to do when Tiger arrives. We need to determine what software does and doesn’t work or needs updating (outbound hardware as well).
While we have many machines, the only G5 has the Io. Apple and AJA having us wait on that until FCP ships is a short-sighted strategy. Clearly one would be better served having a Kona 2 or a Decklink than owning an Io. For us, the Io will have to be abandoned once Tiger ships until it can be used again when the drivers arrive late. Hell, maybe we’ll just sell it instead and move on…

Typical… at NAB they said it was compatible with both the Io and the Kona2. You’re probably right. How about someone from AJA clearing this up?
Tiger arrives in a week… if they expect all the Io users to hold off, it proves that AJA needs to put more effort into the Io and less into the Kona2 for awhile…

It came out either friday or Saturday. While I have only done limited testing, I haven’t seen any issues with FCP yet on the 17″ PB…
