October 5, 2007 at 8:13 am in reply to: XH A1 Capture Dropouts from Panasonic MQ tapesThe problem occured in space of 2 months, first my 3 yo GL2,
then next month my 2 year old GL2.
Using only Panasonic master grade professional AY-DVM63MQ
and AY-DVM83MQ.
Additionaly, using Firestore hard drive to avoid using cameras
for capturing.
Using MiniDV cleaning tape for head cleaning, but head was never a problem (I believe)
as both cameras recorded without problem to the last minute.
It is the whole tape transmission system.
In first case, complete transmission system was replaced (A$650),
whilst in second (younger one) I insisted on cleaning only (A$255).First one failed when fastforwarding a new tape for a job the night before.
Camera would still record, and record without glitch,
but wouldn’t fast forward – EJECT TAPE!Second one failed while recording – EJECT TAPE message.
Footage was OK, tried to capture from that camera, but footage would be
pixelated, blocky. The same tame captured flowlesly from other camera. That’s my story. Conclusion, GL2 (XM2 in Australia) is just a prosumer camera
and the build quality is where they saved, althoug a friend of mine had similar
problems with his XL1s.Mick
P.S. I’ve got frequently 2 different people operating one of the 2 cameras.
Noticed that on of them was trying to close the tape door before the tape mechanism
ingested the tape. That might have possibly contributed to the fault. I’m not sure.
But I think that malfunction would occur instantly if that was the cause. -

Does it mean that he needs something like tis card that is now offered by
Apple as a configuration option on their website.
Secondly, can I use this card on my G5 with PCI express slot,
(it si however called Mac Pro RAID card):The Mac Pro RAID card offers improved performance and data protection to your Mac Pro system

September 25, 2007 at 10:37 pm in reply to: How to record directly to FCP 5.1.4 from Canon XL2?Thanks Chris, that’s great to hear as I’m having my eye on Canon A1 for some time,
but bit reluctant to jump as I’m overwhelmed by the number of new formats, codecs and
incompatibility of cameras and tapes (you can’t really expect any more to be
handed a tape, nearly always has to be ingested by the camera it was shot on).I’d still be 70% DV, at least, I know it’d be a big increase in quality from my Canon XM2,
just I didn’t know how much the workflow was going to change. From the cameraman point of view, have you noticed any problem (reported on forums)
with shooting fast action or similar?Mick

September 25, 2007 at 3:21 pm in reply to: How to record directly to FCP 5.1.4 from Canon XL2?would save about a grand on a Firestore unit, woohoo!
And won’t be as noisy as Firestore, mine was so noisy last time
that I had to chuck it into another room.Chris, what is your experience with Canon A1, editing native HDV or…
(sorry, bit of the topic)Mick

C’mom DRW, he was just kidding, as “backspace” doesn’t “exist”
on a Mac keyboard, it’s a PC term.
I mean the symbol is same, just word “backspace” is not printed on a key.Mick

Most elegant solution is to press Command (Apple) key
with F9 or with F10 and voila – you don’t need to mess
with your settings at all.Mick

Thank you David
