  • What David meant was that you choose setting “never” for computer (and all hard drives) to put
    itself to sleep.
Of course you are going to put the computer to sleep (with all its drives connected)
when you stop working on it (and when you are going to sleep).

So, you are going to do it manually by choosing “Sleep” in Apple menu.

    [Chris Borjis]

I second this. I’ve had the same problem with my SD DVDs played on other people’s plasmas
and LCDs. Firstly, check what DVD player your client is using, is the one of that latest that
    upconvert SD for HD playback, is their TV a Full HD 1080p or just some old model and finally;
are those two connected by a HDMI cable.
Believe me, the difference is HUGE.

I don’t think anything is wrong with your DVD (it plays OK on your TV set / DVD player).

    Thanks Kathy,

    I love good news!

  • Kathy,

There ate few misconceptions regarding your project:

    1. DL DVDs are (in theory only) less compatible with DVD players, but in practice it is perfectly fine.
Produced hundreds of projects on DL DVD, with more than thousand final users, and had only one case of incompatibility and even that one was solved by client trying their other DVD player at home.
Make sure they are DVD + DL, Verbatim is a very reliable brand (both printable and non printable discs).

    2. So, no need for splitting the MPEG 2 file, actually no need to go to Compressor as you are
authoring it in iDVD. For this moment yes, as we need smallest number of variables to narrow the problem down.
Just use Export > Quick Time Movie (self contained if you’ve got enough space, include Chapter Markers,Do not recompress all frames.)
Import resulting file (yes, 40 GB is normal) in your iDVD. Make sure you selected DL in iDVD preferences, just hit Command I before importing your QT file.

    3. Interlacing issue, is it throughout the whole project or just over some stills you created from your
footage, like Freeze Frame, or some resized footage with clashing colors?
There is no need to play with field dominance, you are whole DV in this project aren’t you?

If you’ve got those stills that are causing interlacing problem, please provide more info
    and we’ll fix it.
Otherwise, this workflow HAS TO WORK, just try it.

    Rick,

XM2 doesn’t shoot true widescreen, what it does it cuts off top and bottom of your 4:3 footage.
The image is then scaled (stretched) to fit 16:9 frame, so the image looks much softer then if it was
    shot as 4:3.
There is nothing you can do about it to fix it.
I know, I tried it, on the same camera, had a client who insisted on having it done in 16:9,
although I warned him (shot some footage 16:9 and burned a DVD quickly).

Next time, either hire a XL2, true widescreen camera, or some of the new HDV cameras for that matter,
or just warn the client or simply decline a job.

Said thing about it is that you can’t go back, it’s shot that way, you don’t have a
    quality footage to start with.

If you shot it with 4:3 you could have had 2 options, to persuade client to stay in 4:3,
or to make it look like 16:9 as it was beautifully explained in article called “Faking It”
    by Jude Cotter.

Unfortunately, that 16:9 thing on XM2 and similar DV cameras was just a gimmick.
Another said thing was that you learned the lesson hard way, if it was only
a corporate job you could re shoot.

One of my simple rules I follow is: Never promise to do something you are not sure you can do it,
or something you haven’t tested yet.
You might loose a project or 2 along the way. But that’s better than loosing your reputation.

Some clients would appreciate your honesty some won’t.

    Good luck

    Don,

What do you as an experienced user / troubleshooter think about
    this

    https://www.sonyhdvinfo.com/showthread.php?t=13265

well reported issue regarding the rolling shutter (in CMOS based cameras like Z7)
and flash used in wedding video situation.

Have you had a chance to experience this problem, or maybe you know
    someone who did?

I am seriously looking at buying this camera, but before I spend $200 for hiring it for testing,
I might hear first what do you think about it.

    Thanks

July 28, 2008 at 3:51 am in reply to: GL2 good for Events

    Daniel,

I second Rob’s assessment on GL2 to the last bit.
It is a very good camera for what you want to do with it.

There is a little Canon light (V10 if I’m correct) to attach to
accessory shoe for reception, but you have to be close to the action.
It lifts it up just about enough.
Another option (apart from beachteck) is to have a good mike
during the ceremony (MKE300 or Rode).

See some samples here, all GL2

July 20, 2008 at 11:08 am in reply to: Upgrade on a G5

    Hey Baz,

I’ve got a similar Mac (G5 Dual 2.3 with 2 GB memory, GeForce 6600, FCStudio) and wanting to set up
for HD(V) and I’m not very confident with those PCI cards and everything involved.

Problem is, I’m not even sure what cards are compatible with my machine (in About This Mac,
under PCI it says only PCI, so is it “x” or “e”, I don’t know). Manual says it’s PCIe,
it’s a last G5 series, medium strength configuration.

Living in Geelong, we don’t have a great support here, so, did you do it yourself
or where did you have it all installed (Decklink, hard drives, etc).
I need someone who is going to advise me on the upgrade path.

Would you be able to point to right direction, in terms of who did it for you,
they might be in Melbourne if I was lucky.

    Cheers
