    I had a test of burning a DVD-R of 2 minute 1080i/50 footage,
and it took 30 min in Compressor to encode.

90 % of my work is output to DVD.

I know, I’d be working in 720 mostly (as I can read, most people are going that route),
what would halve that time, but still…

    > Congrats on the new 170 by the way, very sweet little camera.< Thanks, still finding my way around it, here "down under" we don't get that Barry Green's book included... Mostly exposure in low - light indoors situation. Can't get the manual exposure better that in auto, I mean without applying Gain. And with little bit of dull lighting, nothing extremely dark, and Manual White Balance gives a NO Go message. Mio http://www.digitalvideovault.com.au

    >Shane>Go all the way to 5.1.4.

    OK, Shane, I’ll do that.

    >Jeremy> Upgrade to FCS2 and skip 5.1.4.

Thanks Jeremy, well that will happen eventually, I’m just trying to steal some time,
as I just bought HPX 170, and my previous cameras were Canon,
so there is some “accessorizing” to follow.

    Thanks Jeremy,

I believe that would mean an Intel Mac as well…?
My G5 wouldn’t be so great with FCS2?

    Thanks Shane,

    But I don’t have 720p/50 either.

So, upgrade to 5.1.2 will bring support for those options.
    (I’ve got discs for 5.1)

Hi Shane (Ken told me, shout Shane)

I managed to import the footage without any driver (by connecting the camera to my G5 via firewire).
Just File > Import > Panasonic P2, which is actually confirmed on their web site,
    see at the bottom of this link;

    https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/macp...

Only thing is; I can only import 1080i/50. Unable to import 720p/25p or 720p/50p which is sort of
logical as I don’t have those formats available in my Easy Setup or in my Sequence Settings in my
FCP 5.0.4 (and QT 7.1.2, Mac OS 10.4.11).

Is that something I’m going to get by upgrading my FCP to 5.1.2 (I’ve got the discs) or the problem is somewhere else. I’m sort of surprised to see Sequence Settings for 720p/60 in my FCP as I am in PAL land. Why the other two 720p/25 and 720p/50 are not available.

    Thanks

    Craig,

    I didn’t know that I can use P2 with G5 and 10.4.
What utility / driver do I need for that?

I nearly bought a second hand MacBook Pro just because of P2 cards.

May 21, 2009 at 3:17 pm in reply to: P2 Workflow redo

Hi Shane (sorry for volunteering you, just I remember your article on P2 in Cow’s magazine),

I finally ordered my Panasonic HPX170 but I’d like to ask you would I be able to run DVCPRO HD
on my Power Mac 2.3 GHz Dual Core G5, more importantly – am I going to have the trouble with those P2 drivers.
I am planning to get a secondhand Macbook Pro 2.33 or 2.4 GHz, 15″, but I’d still be much happier
if my G5 would be able to run it.

I’m currently on Mac OS 10.4.11 with FCP 5.0.4 ( I did purchase those 5.1 discs but never installed them).

Finally, I read some people have problems with importing footage of P2 cards, or card/folder/footage being corrupt. Then some serious warnings from Barry Green on DVXuser forum.

I mean, one of the reasons I’m buying this camera is that I’m sick of carrying Firestore all the time to have a back up for my tape based footage… Am I going to have to buy now another Firestore for this
camera (in case the P2 is not as reliable as I thought).
When I mentioned Firestore, if I had to use it, does this change my workflow, I mean, skipping the P2 import and just import footage of Firestore in what MXF or QuickTime?

    Thanks a lot

    “… Mid range … for web work…”

Perfect camera for you might be JVC’s GY-HM100 to be released next month.
It’s designed specifically with FCP in mind, records natively in QuickTime format.
There is no need to convert or rewrap files prior to editing.

For those that want more, there is a big brother GY-HM700

Records to SDHC cards, more here:

  • [Walter]As for LaCie, I have four and five year old drives that still work fine. We have a pair of LaCie S2S 1.25TB RAIDs that have edited for three years now without fail.”

I’ve had the same experience, for example, I’ve still got a 6 year old LaCie working (most of that time is switched on) and I’ve got another 4 running.
Had one failed in all those years, and what is interesting; it is LaCie 500 GB d2.

Before it’s gone south, I’ve had the similar signs like Rob, wouldn’t mount, had to restart the computer,
then it’d come back with the message “The computer doesn’t recognise the device” or something like that.

Week or two after that it couldn’t mount any more, but it was backed up and no drama.
