I’m getting conflicting information regarding upgrading from FCP 5 to FCP Studio 2. I’m working with a PowerPC G5 with 4×2.5Ghz processors. OSX 10.4.11. Some folks tell me that FCP 2 must be on an Intel machine to function properly, while others say that FCP 2 is Universal and will work just fine on the G5. What’s the real story? Any help would be appreciated!

Wrong, it’s universal works equally well on both.

We just retired a G5 Dual 2.0 three weeks ago and it was running Studio 2 just fine. We’re currently running a G5 Quad 2.5 in our third suite and it runs Studio 2 just fine.

It works just fine on non-Intel machines.

    Have a wonderful day.

I’m running Studio 2 on a Dual 2.0 G5 and it runs fine.

I too have Studio 2 on a Dual 2.0 G5 (2.5 gig RAM) and it is running fine.
In fact I have put a Decklink HD Pro PCIe card in it with a 2 drive external Sata raid connected to an internal PCIe controller and am able to capture and playback HDCAM no problems – even though the machine is under spec! The only down side is that it takes much longer to render stuff than my Octo core Mac Pro but hey! it was only designed as a capture/playback box (but now does a lot more).

As an ex PC user who dates back to the late 70’s playing with CPM I really am converted now. But back then I did own an Apple II and was a full blown Aussie hippie (never murdered anyone though…)

    Hey Baz,

I’ve got a similar Mac (G5 Dual 2.3 with 2 GB memory, GeForce 6600, FCStudio) and wanting to set up
for HD(V) and I’m not very confident with those PCI cards and everything involved.

Problem is, I’m not even sure what cards are compatible with my machine (in About This Mac,
under PCI it says only PCI, so is it “x” or “e”, I don’t know). Manual says it’s PCIe,
it’s a last G5 series, medium strength configuration.

Living in Geelong, we don’t have a great support here, so, did you do it yourself
or where did you have it all installed (Decklink, hard drives, etc).
I need someone who is going to advise me on the upgrade path.

Would you be able to point to right direction, in terms of who did it for you,
they might be in Melbourne if I was lucky.

    Cheers

    hey Mio

Sorry but I did it all myself. I am an extreme experimenter and never take someone’s word for what can and can’t be done; I try it for myself.

You should download ‘Mactracker’ to determine your Macs setup. But if it is a PCIe version then you would be in the same situation and my Pcie G5 so it would be good to go.

I also have a slightly older mac that doesn’t even have PciX slots; just PCI and I tried a Decklink HD Pro PciX card in it and it worked ok for SD but would not work at all in HD so there are Mac’s and there are Mac’s….

But remember I come with no guarantees so don’t hold me to it.

    Thanks Baz,

    I’ll start from Macktrecker then.

Oh yes, I visited your website,
    pretty impressive set-up.

    Cheers
