i think the moving panes tutorial is on the Cow tutorials Site.

from my recollection you create a moving bar comp. then place that comp in a new comp. then put a background clip underneath the moving bar comp. and duplicated it so there are two background clips.

turn off the eyeball for the bars comp. make sure it is right above the duplicate background clip. choose the “alpha matte” option for the duplicate background comp which is next to the transfer mode option in the timeline and set it to the bars comp.

then apply DISTOR>TRANSFORM filter on the duplicate background clip and mess with the parameters to scale up the image.

then play the comp and it should work. wherever there is a bar in th bar comp the alpha matte will show the duplicated background clip taht has the distortion on it and look cool above the normal background clip.

The same question comes up at my place of work. Should we swithc to FCP from AVID.

I came in here as a FCP kid and now learing avid. and my company wont make the switch to FCP because for one the cost difference is not that much when you get a top quality system with everything to run right. and two, the biggest reason is because they have 4 freelancers in here at a time cutting on Avid Adrenalines and things tend to go wrong or bog down and when you are calling tech support to find out what is the problem with an Avid it is easy as pie. Becuase they sell you EVERYTHING! The avid system, the Mojo, the drives, etc. the tech support line knows their stuff. and when you shell out 400 a day for each freelancer you dont have time to waste.

FCP on the other hand is only the software company, and then you need a seperated company like AJA for your box, and other company for your hardrives. And when you need tech support when something goes wrong, they all start to point the finger and you could be on the phone all day long.

So, i guess waht i am saying is that you need to figure out your purpose of your editing application.

If i had my own company, i could buy FCP bundle for 1500 dollars, a DV deck, and a dvd burner and be on my way. Or if you are only having a freelancer under you or 2.

Personally I love FCP because it is so much easier to create effects and motion graphics than on an AVID. I uses Xpress Pro at work. For a cuts only, and dissolve application I see no difference. I personally hate, and do understand how to created simple motion graphics in AVID.

But, if you are planning to have a lot of others do the work for you, be ready for lots of problems to occur and just save yourself the headaches and get an AVID.

That’s my thoughts, and it make a lot of sense when you think about it. When i came to my current company i tried to sell them on FCP, but the Senior Editor told me that the cost issues is negligible, its the Reliablity and support issue that matters when you have strict deadlines and pay freelancers 400 a day.

    Hope this helps.
