Have you rendered preview files? Your computer may not be beefy enough to create good real time preview.
Is your source DV, HDV or what? -
Using square pixels in a wide screen project might be the issue. Try a Standard DV PAL project.

If you have stereo audio channels with 2 mics in the Timeline, simply apply the “Fill Left” or “Fill Right” effect to duplicate one channel.

1024 X 768 source file is ok if you are in a DV Project Preset, but not OK if you are in a custom desktop project…DVD is SD only.
What is probably killing you is your 64 bit OS, not supported by Adobe for Premiere.

Close the titler, choose Window>Workspace>Restore Default workspace. Then customize the main workspace if you like and then choose Window>Workspace>Save Workspace.

Noticing the 6 gb RAM…Vista 64 bit is not supported as an OS by Adobe.

No AVI from Premiere is not going to the job nearly as well as a .wmv…Windows Media Video. Use 2 pass VBR, maximum bitrate about 3 mbps, target bitrate of 2 mbps.

Sounds like you have tried what I would have. The auto save project file may be your last hope..just choose the newest one, not the highest numbered version and that should have been created less than 20 minutes before all went pear shaped.

Not sure what AVI Recomp is!
Video that lacks the ability to jump back or forward capabilities is often lacking an Index. Like in a book, the index is the last thing created during the compression. If the app used to do the compression crashes or the computer is shut off prior to completion, you will end up with a partial video file with no index.

The new video apparently was shot in HDV. You can change a menu setting in the camera to Downconvert to DV, then capture AVI files in a SD project via firewire.
