AVCHD is a consumer format, highly compressed and requires a stout 4 core CPU to preview smoothly.
HDV is the next step up (prosumer) and easier to edit.
Suggest the ever popular Canon HV-30 or 40. -
Your pics are likely high resolution Jpegs, draining your system of memory. Re size the images in Photoshop to 640×480 if you are not doing zooming or 1200×900 if you are.

To eliminate the camera and firewire cable, try them on another computer. To eliminate the firewire card, try another camera on your computer.
Then you can start looking at your computers hardware and OS. -
Yes you can. Depending on the version of Premiere you are using;
In CS3, choose File>Export>Movie
Microsoft AVI is the file type, compressor is None and Millions + of Colors is the color depth. The “+” is for the Alpha channel. -
HDV does not preview during capture.

Your DVD recorder likely created a DVD which has VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder.
I dont know how you got WMV files, but I know you dont want another encode to Quicktime if your target is DVD. Things go down hill with each encode.
Copy the VOB files to your hard drive, change the file extension to .mpg and import into Premiere. Edit and export as Mpeg 2 DVD at a bitrate that will fit your movie on a 4.3 GB disc.
Import that file into Encore for authoring as a DVD. -

Not in front Vista at the moment, but enter msconfig in the search box just above the Start button. This will launch the System Configuration Utility. Select the Services tab, select “Hide all Microsoft Services”, then Disable All. Reselect Flexnet… and click Apply.
Select the Start Up Tab, choose Disable All and then OK.
Reboot and select “Dont Show me again” on the Window that pops up. -
Try to recapture the footage with your other camera.

Capturing via firewire is simply data transfer with no changes made to the data other than;
1. Dropped frames
2. Dirty playback head on the camera
3. Tape defects -
In the nested sequence, change the “Show Keyframes” mode for the audio track to “Show track Volume”. you then can either use the Audio mixer or CTRL+click the volume rubber band to add keyframes to the audio track.
